Hey everybody, Andrew here with FreeJazzLessons.com.
Thank you all for joining me here today.
So today we're gonna take a look at the introduction
to Black Orpheus and a couple of cool ways
that you can change up the chords
to make the song sound a lot cooler.
So without any further ado,
let's head on over to the piano and let's get started.
All right, well, welcome to the piano.
We're gonna go ahead and take a look
at the rudimentary version of this song,
followed by a little bit of a more interesting,
cooler version that you can do of this introduction.
So let's take a look at the first basic version.
[D]
[E] [D]
[E]
[Am]
So, you know, not too bad.
It was basic, but we can throw in a couple of cooler chords
to make this sound a little bit more interesting.
So I'm gonna play through this introduction first,
and then we're gonna break it down piece by piece.
[D] [F#m]
[A#] [B]
[F#]
[G#] [D] [Em] [F#]
[E]
[E]
[A] All right, so let's go ahead and break this down
right from the beginning.
We're gonna start off by playing an A followed by a B,
[G] and then we're gonna be playing this voicing right [Dm] here,
which is a D minor 11th.
So we have [D] a D, [G] G, [C] and a C in our left hand,
and then we have [F] an F, A, and C in our right hand.
So we got [G] this, [D] [Dm] D, [D]
C,
[F#] then we're moving down to this [C#m] voicing right here,
which is a C sharp minor 11th voicing,
where you [C#] have a C sharp, [B] F sharp, and B in our left hand.
Then we [E] have an E, G sharp, and B in our right hand.
Okay, so from the beginning again,
[D] [F#] [C#m] we're going to this [A] A, [C#] B,
then right [Fm] here we have [Cm] a new voicing,
which is an F [C] minor 11th with a C in the bass.
So we have C, [F] F, B flat in our left hand,
then we [D#] have E [G#] flat, A flat, and C in our right hand.
Now [A#] you're gonna notice my right hand
just moves up to this B flat triad,
where we have an F, B flat, and D,
[G#] then moves back down to this triad we had before,
E flat, A flat, and C.
And then we're gonna move to this [B] E, excuse me,
B Phrygian seventh chord.
So we have B, E, and [E] A in our left hand,
then we have E, F sharp, and B in our right hand.
And I'm just doing this little arpeggiation pattern
that consists of a B, C, E, and then F sharp.
And I'm just bringing it up to here,
and I come back to here.
[Am]
So next we have A, [Bm] then B, [G#]
then our next chord,
which is kind of a D seven [Am] with a sharp 11th.
So we have [D] D, F sharp, [D] and C in our left hand,
and then we have an [B] E, and then [E] G sharp,
which is our sharp 11th, and a C in our right hand.
We go up to [D] this D, [C] back down to here,
[E] and [G] now we got this new G seven flat nine chord.
So we have G, and F in our left hand,
then we have B, [Em] E, [E]
A flat, which is our flat nine,
and B in our right hand.
Okay, [G] our next chord is gonna [F#] be
this F sharp minor 11th chord.
So we have F sharp and E in our left hand,
then we're double thumbing this [A] A and [F#] B in our right hand,
then we got an E, and an A [A] right here.
[F] Next chord is gonna be this F seven dominant chord.
So we have an F and E flat in our left hand,
then we got an [Dm] A, D, [Gm] and G [D] in our right hand.
[E] Now our final chord, one of our final chords
is [Em] gonna be this, which is an E [E] minor 11th chord.
So we have E and B in our left hand,
and we're double thumbing this G and A [Em] together,
then we got [D] D, F sharp, and A.
Now I'm gonna [E] do this little arpeggiation pattern
up to here,
[G] and right here I'm hitting
kind of this E dominant seventh chord
without the E in the bass.
So we have G sharp, [G#] C, and D in our left hand,
and then we got [G] G [C] here,
then we're gonna come up to the C,
then E, then G sharp,
[E] then we're gonna finish off with this voicing
where we have an E in our [E] left hand,
then we got an E, G sharp, C, and E in our right hand.
And those are our chords.
