[D#] I'm Jenny Carter [N] of the Blind Boys of Alabama.
I'm the lead singer.
In case some of you don't
know the history [D#] of the Blind Boys, I'll give you a little preview of it.
Blind Boys were
students at the School for the Blind in Talladega, Alabama.
That's how we met up.
That's how
we started singing together.
We sang a male chorus.
We sang a mixed choir.
And from that,
the quartet came to be.
[D] And on June the 10th, [B] 1944, the Blind Boys started out professionally.
[D#]
[D#m] When [N] we were in school, there was a quartet that came on the radio every day called the
Golden Gate Quartet.
We would look forward to their program every day.
They would sing
Motherless Children, and that's how we got acclaimed with the song.
That's how we got
[G]
[E]
that song in our repertoire.

[F#m] [Bm] It [B] took me a while [E] to get going, [G#m] [A]
to get used to the tune of [E] Motherless Children, [F#] [E] and to
went to Mother's shows and Billy and I [N] recorded the song.
We traded voices.
He sang one and
I sang one.
Well, Father [F#] will [E] do [C#m] the best [F#] he [B] can [G] when mother [E] is gone.
[A]
[E] [A] Yes, he [E] will.
He'll do what he can when mother [B] is gone.
Mother is gone.
[E] He'll do
[A] anything.
He just don't understand.
[E] Nobody treats [C#m] a blackened mother [F#] well [B] when the mother is [E] gone.
[A]
[E] [F#] [E] Yeah, [A] that sounds better [Gm] right there.
[E] Motherless children have a hard time when mother [B] gone.
Jason [Em] Isbell, a very nice gentleman, [F] produced [E] a record, played guitar.
[A] He played good guitar.

[C] I [D] think that [E] got it.
Well, I hope, I hope, you know, when I listen to it, it brings [G] back, you know, motherless [B] children see a mighty hard time when mother is gone.
[A] You know, [E] a lot of these children of today, they [A] don't appreciate what [E] their mother or their father have done for them.
They don't appreciate, [C#m] you know, [F#] the sacrifice [B] that was made.
[E] [A] Mother is [E] gone.
[Em] [E]
I think we got it.
[B] That might be it.
[E]
[A] And then just fade away.
[E] Keeps it like [C#m] Mother will.
[F#] Yeah.
[B] Mother [E] is gone.
