wrote that was on our [E] latest record.
And this is a great tale, I didn't tell you [Em] about it.
Oh Lord, [A] we've been fortunate enough over the years
to have [F#] been nominated for a couple of Grammys
and we got to go out [G] to Los Angeles
and party with [A] all the big wheels out there,
I guess is what you call them.
I don't know if they knew we were there,
but [E] we knew we were there.
[D] My wife and I were staying out in [A] Santa Monica.
[E] I could look out the [B] window of my hotel room
and see the [F#] Santa Monica Pier and the Pacific Ocean,
just a beautiful place.
I kept noticing all these homeless folks out there
and I got [D] to doing a little [A] inquiring into that
and found out that a large majority,
well maybe not a majority,
but a large number of those folks [A] that are homeless
are veterans of [E] Vietnam and later conflicts,
now of course [B] Iraq and Afghanistan.
And that sent [F#] me to thinking,
you know, I'm not up here [B] trying to be political or anything,
but those folks, people that have [F#] gone
and laid down their lives for us
so that we can be here [E] and live in this country,
they don't need to be homeless.
We need to take care of that problem
if we can't do anything else.
[Dm] But like I said, I'm not trying to be political,
this is just one man's point of view.
And I [F#] wrote this song about it,
it's one called The Homeless Man.
[A] [E] [B]
[A] [F#]
It's [E] cold and steep,
this pain was built.
[B] Corporal William [E] Howard Campbell
He knew [F#] he'd never win
He did his [E] time with the 101
[B]
Took a [E] simple country boy
Taught [F#] him how to use [B] a gun
[A] After four long years of service
[C#] To tools and Vietnam
[A] The country [E] that he served so well
[F#] Doesn't seem to [C#] give a damn
[B] He's a [E] homeless man
[G#m]
[A] He has [E] a son
Lives in L [C#].A.
[B] [A] Hasn't spoke to him in 20 years
[C#] He just don't know what to say
But [E] love and wine
She was his [C#] right hand
[A] But dear the nightmares and the memories
[C#] Became more than she could stand
[A] Now he has everything he owns
In a [F#] worn out shopping cart
[F#] He's [A] never begged for anything
He [C#] just doesn't have the heart
He's just a [E] homeless man
[E] Now in [A] this land of plenty
Where [B] so many have it all
[A] He sleeps in an alley
[B] Half a block from city hall
[E]
[B]
[A] [E] [B] [F#m]
[B] The Fourth of July
They found [E] him there
On a cold November [B] night
[A] Though he fought so many battles
This [F#] time he'd lost the fight
No [C#] one seemed to [E] care
He was gone
[B]
[A] Lady Middle Pauper's grave
With a [F#] tiny little [C#] stone
[A] As a young man and his mother
[F#] Sat alone and cried
Holding [A] a silver [E] star medallion
Someone [F#] found there at his side
[F#m] He was a homeless man
[B] He was just a homeless [E] man
[B] [C#] [E]
[F#] [B]
[E] [C#]

[B] [B] [E]
