When Nat Cole died, I was in Vegas or somewhere, and I got a call from Frank Sinatra's people,
and they said, look, we're going to do a show for Maria Cole and the kids and all for Nat.
And he said, would you come down?
Sinatra, I didn't talk to him [N] personally then, but he said,
would you come down and do like the folk thing for this show in California, forget the theater,
some big place.
So I went down and I did folk music there and my part of the show.
And after
the show, you know, just sit next to Frank Sinatra and you don't say anything.
You just
kind of sit.
He drinks Jack Daniels and you watch and you go, wow, he's drinking just like the rest
of us.
So I, I went back and I thought someday I'm going to write a song for him just for fun.
A few years ago, I wrote this song and I was scared to send it to him because after I finished
writing and I thought, well, this is sort of, sort of in the past tense and he's still in the present.
But after being here this last couple of days, I can't tell you how much fun this has been.
And
after being here and seeing, seeing, I call it, you're all champions.
You know, the champions
are here, man.
This is neat.
So what I'm going to do today is do this song that I wrote for him.
I never gave it to him only because I guess I was nervous to do that anyway.
But it's called
Blue Light and it's something that we've all seen.
It's something that we've all worked with.
[C#m] And, and [C] it's the way you [E] feel.
I had a thing happen to me a few years ago [C] that,
[E] you know, I had three brain surgeries in 19 [C] what, 67.
And I [E] had to stop.
And it took me a long time.
Took me 10 years to get so I could [C#m] walk and do stuff and wear braces [C] on my legs and all that jazz.
[E] And so [C] I've only performed this song one other [C#m] time.
And that was in Las Vegas.
[C] But [E] this song
could be written for all of us, you know, all of us who have shared [C#m] being the leader of the band.
[C] [E]
[C] [C#m]
When I [C] was [E] the leader of the band,
[C] I didn't [C#m] mind singing [C]
every song in [E] hand,
[A#] learning every line, [A] [G#] looking for that blue light, [C#m] [E] singing so in tune, [A] [G#m] setting every mood right,
[F#] [G#] filling every room.
[C#m]
[E] [C#m]
[E] [C#m]
[C] When I was [E] the leader of the band, [C] I had it all.
[C#m]
I could [C] look around the room
[E] and [A#] watch the music pay the call.
[A] [G#m]
When the night was over, [C#m] [C] [E] everything [A#] was planned, [A] paid.
[G#] Hey, it's easy for [F#] [G#] the leader of the band.
[C#m] [E] [C#m] [E]
[C#m]
But now that goes the music past, swinging on the way.
Can't you make our [E] music last while we play?
I [C#m] look [A] [Am] for [G#] the blue light and [C#m] I [E] listen for the hand.
[A] I [G#] think I'll just sing an old song.
[F#m] [E] I'm the leader of the [G#] band.
[C#m]
[C] [E]
[C#m]
When I [C] was the [E] leader of the band,
[C] I was the best.
[C#m]
[C] Time, [E] tears, and all the years [A#] left me all undressed.
[A] [G#] Someone give my blue light.
[C#m] [C] Would you [E] light my music stand?
[A] People, [E] don't you know me?
[F#] [E] [C#m] I'm the leader of the [E] band.
Yes.
