Welcome to Keyboard Blues dot [D] com.
This is chapter 9 in the piano [Gb] lesson series titled
Blues for Piano and Keyboard.
[Gm]
[C] [Gm]
[C]
[Gm] [E]
[Bb] Now [Eb] blues and gospel [C] music have always had a lot in common.
Here's a new left [Gm] hand technique for you.
I'm gonna lay down my [Bb] burdens, down by the [G] riverside,
down by the [C] riverside,
down by the [G] [C] riverside.
[Gm] Now in the past [F] I've taught you a left hand riff
that sounds like this.
Remember [G] that?
You can review [Dm] that in earlier blues chapters.
[F] Now the right hand is gonna sound like this.
[Eb]
[A] Now that's also a riff that I taught you in some of the
earliest blues chapters.
Today I'm gonna teach you a new left [G] hand riff called
left hand propulsion.
Sounds like this.
Listen.
[C] [F]
[C] [G] Now this is a great [Bb] left hand technique to use
especially if you want to learn to play some
cookin' gospel music.
Let's take a closer look.
[C] In this next section we're gonna make use of [N] musical concepts called half steps
and whole steps.
Now if that sounds like a foreign language to you, you really need
to go through our first course titled
Pattern Piano and Keyboard.
It's the original course
and you can find it on the net at playpianotoday
dot com.
Let's look at the first chord in the song Down by the Riverside.
Wonderful old spiritual.
The first chord [C] is
C.
[Bb] However this riff does not start on the root of that chord.
It starts a whole step below.
So a whole step below C
is B flat.
Right students?
Yeah right.
B flat.
Okay.
So the first note is a whole step below the root.
Then it goes up a half [B] step to B and then up another half step to C which is the root
and repeats it.
So it's actually pretty simple.
Let me [A] start again.
Starting a whole step below [Bb] the root sounds like this.
[C] [Bb] Up to speed it sounds like this.
[C] Now this riff really helps to push
or propel the beat of the music.
[F] Now [Fm] the second chord of this song
is F.
Now we don't play the root.
We start a whole step below
F which is [Eb] E flat right?
Okay so we start a whole step below, [E] come up a half step,
come up [F] another half step and repeat it.
So [Eb] F sounds like this.
[Ab] Oh and I'm throwing that right hand riff in with it.
[A] Nice and funky.
Okay let me go between C and F.
Sounds like this.
[Eb]
Here's G.
[B] Right?
I started a whole [F] step below the root,
came up a half [Gb] step, came up [G] another half step
and repeated it.
[F] So here's G again.
[B] Okay let me show you something a little more [Bb] now.
Okay I've taught you the left hand [C] propulsion.
[A] Today I want to show you something a little more.
If [Bb] you've gotten comfortable with that
[C] I want to show you the left hand propulsion
[C] with an octave backflip.
How do you like that?
You could be in the Olympics.
Here it is.
In F it sounds like this.
[F]
[Bb] You start a whole step below right?
Come up [B] a half step,
come up another [C] half step and then drop an octave.
Really thump it good.
You're like a kick drum.
Right?
Here it is again.
Here's F.
[F] Here's G.
[G] [Bb] Alright let's put it together now with the right hand.
Sometimes I'll play the repeated note [C] and sometimes [Bb] I'll play that octave [C] backflip.
[Bb] In either case here's the whole thing.
[Eb]
[G] Down by the river [C] side, down by [Gm] the river side.
Gonna lay down [Fm] my burdens.
[Bb] Down by the river side.
Gonna [F] study
[Eb] water no [F] more.
Yeah.
[Abm] [C]
Here's the entire song again minus vocals
[Bb] so that you can concentrate on just the piano.
[Eb]
[C]
[Bb] [C]
[Gm] [Eb] [Fm]
[C] [Bb]
[G] [Eb] [Abm]
[C]
