[C] [Am] One thing I know about music is [G] that it has the power to really touch people's lives and have a lot of meaning.
[C] [Am] Recently I heard a story about [G] one of my brother's friends from [D] college and it really touched my heart.
[C] I [A] wanted to invite him to the house so he could share [G] his story as well as his incredible gift to music [D] and what it means to [C] him.
[Am]
[G]
Hey, what's up man?
How are you man?
Pretty good, how about yourself?
Hanging in there.
What's going on?
Been a minute, nothing much.
How about you?
What's up guys?
[C] I'm Tommy Troutwine.
I'm [Am] 20 years old and I go to the University of Georgia.
[G] I actually know Matty B through his older brother [C] who's one of my good buddies [Am] and that I go to school with.
So Tommy man, [G] thank you so much for coming [D] out and agreeing to share your story.
[C] The other day whenever we were talking [Am] about what song to do, we chose California Dreamin' [G] because it's a song about smiling through the broken times and just remembering that things will always get better.
And I know you have a really powerful story that ties into that.
So could you just tell me that and tell me why you [Am] wanted to choose that song?
Yeah man, so [G] in 2010 my older brother Will, who's [C] about two years older than me, [Am] he took his own life.
[G] He committed suicide.
[D]
And this was [C] such a shock to [Am] our family because we [G] never [D] saw any signs of depression [G] in him.
He was the [Am] stud lacrosse player at the school and he [G] was the best guitar player, you know, he was the lead singer in [C] a band [Am] and he was the happiest kid in the world [G] we thought.
And [D] it was really [Em] devastating to us.
I'm really sorry to hear [Am] that man.
And I know that now [G] you play music [D] and in the song [C] California Dreamin' it says,
[Am] gotta smile through all the broken times [G] and that is for sure a broken time.
And I'm just wondering [C] if any [A] good came out of that, if any.
[G] Yeah man, Will and I used to play music together and it was kind of [C] with him that [Am] first sparked my musical [G] passion.
And after he passed, [C] as cliche as it [Em] sounds, his guitars were [Am] kind of [G] screaming at me to be played.
[D] So [C] I just started picking them up and teaching myself and by the time I [G] could play four chords I was writing my own [Cm] songs and kind of expressing myself [E]
in a way I'd never done before.
[G] You started a band too, right?
Yeah, so recently I started this project called Jester and through this band I get to share my expressions [C] with three of my best [Am] friends and able [G] to create this music that people can hopefully [D] also [C] get attached to and [Am] help them through some stuff.
[G] And I also know that your family started a suicide prevention [C] foundation.
Yeah, that's right.
In 2010, shortly [G] after my brother passed, like I said, Johns Creek had never really [Am] been touched by this depression [G] and suicide or at least never talked about.
And so my parents kind of decided we can't just [Am] sit here and let this [G] pain eat us alive.
[D] How can we turn this into [Am] something good?
And how can we prevent this from ever [G] happening again?
So we [D] started this non-profit [G] suicide awareness charity [C] organization called the Will to [Am] Live Foundation [G] and basically what we do is try to teach kids that life is [C] hard and [Am] we're all going through the same [G] thing, a different version of it, and so why not just open up to each other and [C] help each other through it.
[Am] That's really powerful [D] and you know when you [G] sing you have a really [D] unique voice.
[C] You can really just tell the [Am] past that you've walked down and your story [G] being told through the grit and emotion in your voice.
What do you [A] want people to feel whenever they hear you sing?
[G] Yeah, that's a good question man.
So this song is so fitting [Gm] because for me, [A] I've walked that road.
I've been [G] through those dark times and [C] I just want everybody [A] to know that [G] no matter what, [D] there's always good in every [Am] situation.
I just keep going after it and just keep following your dreams.
[G]
[D] [Ab] [C]
[Am]
[G] [D] [G]
[C] [Am]
[G] [D] [G]
[C] [Am]
[G] [D]
[G] [C] Said it can't [Am] be light if it wasn't for the dark [G] [D] side.
So [C] did you, got to [Am] smile through all the broken times, it'll [G] all be [D] fine, just in your mind.
[C] Oh yeah, [Am] we were paralyzed by fear, [G] now we're more than [D] gives me [G] hope.
We [C] just chasing dreams, chasing dreams, [G] California dreaming.
[D] Oh yeah, [C] chasing dreams, chasing dreams, [G] California dreaming.
[D]
[C] [Am]
[G] [D]
[C] So we shine.
[Am]
[G]
California dreaming.
Sometimes [C] I'll get home [A] from school and see people on the [G] news arguing with each other, yelling they point of view while [C] people fighting and [Am] rioting and shooting to kill [G] each other.
Somebody's brother, pow, there goes another.
I wish love would be our [A] drug so bullets could heal each [G] other.
Smiles instead [D] of tears, be kind and real to each other, [C] we just want to live [A] our life, red and yellow, black and white, [G] maybe one day we'll wake up and we'll all just be alright.
We just [C] chasing dreams, [Am] chasing dreams, [G] California dreaming.
[D] Oh yeah, [C] chasing [Am] dreams, [G] California dreaming.
[D]
[C] [A]
[G] [D] So [C] we shine.
[Am]
[G] [D] [G] California [C] dreaming.
[A] Meeting Tommy today [G] and hearing his story really gave [D] me a new perspective on my [C] song and it's [Am] amazing how you can see someone turn such a [G] tragedy into triumph.
[D] And if y'all were impacted by this video, [C] send this video to anybody that you think needs to see it or that you think would be encouraged by it and I hope you guys have a great one.
