This is the guitar lesson for Bob Dylan's I [B] Want You from GuitarMadeEasy.com.
First things first, [E] make sure your guitar is in standard E tuning.
Alright, there's three parts to the song.
[B] There's a verse, a chorus, and a bridge.
The verse goes like this.
This is the chord [F] progression.
It's F, [Am] A minor, [Dm] D minor,
[C] C, [Bm] [Bb] B flat,
[C] C, [Dm] D minor, [C] C.
So it's an eight chord progression.
[D] So instead of our usual four, we have eight.
And that's the verse of the song.
The verse played sounds like [F] this.
[Am]
[Dm]
[C] [Bb]
[C]
[Dm] [C]
Alright, so that's the verse.
And then it [N] goes right into, I want you, I want you, I want you so bad.
And the I want you chorus is like this, okay?
It's [F] F, [Am] A minor, [Dm] D minor, [C] C.
[Em]
And then at the end of the chorus he says, [G] honey I want you.
And it just kind of stays on [F] F.
So it goes, stays on F [G] for, I think it's two counts.
So the chorus [F] sounds like this.
[G] [Am] [Dm]
[C]
[F]
[Em] And then we go back into the verse.
Alright, so [F] we have, I want you, F, [C] I [Am] want you, A minor, [A] I want you, [Dm] D minor, [D] so bad,
[C] C.
And then it goes, honey I want you.
And that's the two [F] counts on F.
[Bm] Alright, the bridge of the song, the chord progression is a little bit different, alright?
The chord progression for the bridge is this, it's [Am] A minor,
[A] D [Dm] minor, [Am] A minor,
[B] [Bb] B flat, [G]
[C] C.
[Db] And that's it, okay?
So it sounds like [Am] this, it goes back [Dm]
[Am]
[Bb] [C]
into the verse, [F] okay?
[Am]
[Em] Alright, so that's the bridge.
[Am] A [A] minor, D minor, A minor, B flat, [C] C, okay?
[G] Now let's talk about the strumming pattern for [E] the song, alright?
So the strumming pattern [Gm] that I use is this, it [F] goes, so it's pluck, down, down, down,
up, pluck, down, down, up, down.
[A] Next chord, pluck, [Am] down, down, down, up, pluck, down, down, down, up.
Alright, [D] next chord, [Dm] pluck, down, down, down, up, pluck, down, down, down, up.
And when I play Bob Dylan songs, I make sure it's [D] a little bit sloppy because that kind
of gives it that Bob Dylan feel, [G] alright?
So when I say pluck, I'm plucking the bass note in the strings.
So if [Abm] the first chord [C] is an [E] F, [F] technically, if it was an F, the bass note would be that
root F right here on the first fret [B] E string.
But in this case, I play my [C] F like this, [F] and I pluck the, just kind of like the bottom
of the chord.
So I pluck and then strum, alright?
[C] The next chord I'll be able to illustrate that a little [B] bit better.
So on A minor, [Am] the [A] bass note is this A right here, so I pluck, [Am] strum, pluck, pluck, okay?
[A] So I pluck the bass note, then I strum [Eb] through it, but I kind of make it a little bit messy
[G] once again, like I said, because it's a Bob Dylan song, [Am] so I go
So I might be hitting a couple more strings than [A] just that A string right there, alright?
[B] So that's what I do.
I'll break it down for you one more [G] time really slow so you can see it, alright?
So [F] it goes
[Am]
[Dm]
[C]
So pluck, down, down, up, down, up, pluck, down, down, up, pluck, down, down, up, pluck,
down, down, up, down.
Alright?
[B]
And that's the strumming pattern.
