[E] Okay, here's Boom Boom [Abm] Boom by John Lee Hooker.
[Em] I previously posted this and [N] I got some things wrong so I'm reposting it.
It's just basically the chords between the licks.
I had them mixed up.
But we'll talk [E] about that anyways.
So what I'm going to do is play the lick for you, go through it a couple times and then
we'll go through it piece by piece and help you learn.
We're in E here by the way.
[G] So it goes like [Eb] this.
[B] [Em]
[G] [A] [Em]
[A] [B] [Am]
[C] [D] [Am] [Em]
[G] [A] [D]
[Em] [D] [G] [Em]
[G] [A] [B] [Em]
[G] [A] [Em]
[G] [A] [E] [D] [G] [A]
[C] [D] [A] [Em]
[G] [A] [E] [B] [Em] [Bm]
[E] [D] [G] [Em] [G]
[A] [E]
Okay, [G] so let me give you the basic lick.
What I just played was pretty much what he plays on his original recording from the early
60s.
I've seen him play it a lot of different times and pretty much he sticks to this riff all
the way through and then has the band go through the chords.
But here's the basic riff.
Okay, I'll do the left hand first and then right hand will do it together.
So we start on the [A] G string, second [B] fret, we're sliding to the fourth, and then I go
to the third fret of the [D] B.
[A] [Bm]
Now what I like to do, you can do it with the first two fingers,
I like to do it with the middle two fingers.
So ring [A] finger, [B] [D] middle finger, and then [A] back to the second fret on the G string, open [G] G,
then second fret [E] D, [D] open D, then back to the [E] second fret D.
So real [A] slow.
[E] [D]
[G] [Em]
[D] [Em]
Okay, one more time.
Ring finger slide two to four [A] on the G, [B] [Em] middle finger on the third fret [D] of the B, and then
pointer finger second fret on [A] the G, open [G] G, D, [E] second fret, [D] open, and back to second [E] fret.
That's an E note.
So that's the lick he uses a lot.
[A] [E] Now the chords are E, [G] G, [A] A, [E] D.
And he'll go like, [A] [G] [Em]
[A] [E] [Gm] [A] he can play the chords but lots of [E] times
he just uses the open guitar for a G chord.
[A] [Em] He's just playing [E] fast and having fun.
[A] [Em] So you [E] can do that.
[A] [E]
[A] [Bm] Then [A] [G] [E] [A] [E]
the second riff goes like [A] this.
[Em] [D] [E] So what's that?
Well that's D string second fret, open [G] G, [Em] then G string, now you can play the second
fret and [A] bend up, back down, or slide up to the third fret and back.
And then [G] open, and then [E] D second [Eb] fret, [D] D open, back to [E] that second fret on the E.
Again, that's your E note.
That's the key we're in.
So that second riff is [G] [A] both [G] [E]
[D] [E] [N] hands here.
See what's going on.
I know it's a little tricky with this [E] crazy camera.
Open [G] [Am] G, that's the G second fret, bend down.
[Gm] Then D, second [E] fret, open.
[D] [E]
[A] So those are the two big riffs.
The first one is, [D]
[G] [E] [G] [A]
[Em] [A] [E] [G]
[A] then he [Em] plays the first riff again but he ends on an open [A] A string.
So he goes, [G] [A]
then the chords there are [C] A, C, [D] D, [Am] A, A, C, D, A.
[A]
[C] [D] [A]
Then he comes back and plays
that second riff again.
[Dm] [E] [G] [A]
Then he plays the first riff again [D] [G] [B] and he ends up, he can play an open B string or he
can play the fourth fret on the G string.
Same note.
[Bm] [Em]
Then the chords [B] are D, I'm sorry, B, [D] D, [E] E, [B] D.
Now I'm doing them as power chords.
Which is the power chord shape.
If you don't know it, you've got to go study it.
Second fret on the A string, [D] fifth fret on the A, seventh [E] fret on the A.
[Bm] But a [G] lot of
times people just sit there on the [A] B.
They'll go.
[Em] [B]
[A] And then back to [Em] this riff.
[D]
[G] [E] [G] [A] [E] [Am] So that's kind of the last [F] riff in [B] the [E] pile.
He comes off [Bm] that B.
[Em] [B] [D]
[G] [Em] So what's that?
That's the second fret on [B] the A string.
[D] And then open D, second fret [E] D, open [G] G twice.
And then [E] back to the D second [B] fret.
[D] [E] [G]
[E] Okay, so those are all the riffs.
I'll do it one more time for you and hopefully you've got enough to at least get going.
So real slow.
[B] Three, four, one.
[A] [D] [E]
[G] [A] [E] [A]
[E] [G] [A] [E]
[B] [A] [C]
[D] [A]
[E] [G] [A] [E] [B]
[Em] [B] [D] [E]
[B] [D] [Em]
[G] [A] [E] All right.
Now, if you listen to a lot of versions of him, especially live, he's just sticking with
[A] this riff [Em] the whole time.
Just keeps playing [Ab] that and the band goes [A] through the chords.
He doesn't change a thing.
[E] [G] [E] [Em] And they're going pretty fast.
So, [Eb] warning.
I'm trying to [D] show it to you slowly.
[A] [G] [E] So if you get nothing else, get [A] that riff.
[E] And lots of times people, instead of doing [Ebm] this, [Bm]
third fret on the B string [Em] will play
the open high E string.
[Gbm] [Em]
[G] [A] [Em] Because you don't want it too neat and clean.
It's the blues, you know.
