So we're going to do a backwards roll.
And I'm not quite sure exactly which one it is, so I'll do maybe two different ones.
It's using thumb, first finger, and second finger.
And I'll just play like a E chord on my left hand.
And for the most part, what it is, [Eb] is thumb hits first, and then it's [Abm] second finger, [Eb] then first finger.
And for the most basic backwards roll, that just keeps repeating over and over.
And it gets, [Ebm]
you change it up a little bit.
[Eb] There's a couple times where the thumb, where that breaks that pattern.
And it goes thumb, second finger, and then followed by two [Ab] of those same rolls of thumb,
two, [B] one, thumb, two, one.
So it would [G] sound like this.
Thumb, [Eb] second finger, thumb, second finger, first finger, thumb, second finger, first finger.
A place where it was used was in that lead that Buster would do for Cannonball Rag.
[Ebm] [Eb]
That's the kind of thing that would come in.
There's one other one that's pretty, really similar, but instead of just using, you're
still using three fingers.
But this time the thumb rotates down to the fourth string.
And for the most part, that's how I'd usually always start the roll, is on the fourth string.
And what it does is thumb on the fourth string, first finger on the second string, and then
followed by two of those rolls of thumb, two, one, thumb, two, one.
So, so you'd use that in like the [Cm] bridge of Jerry's Breakdown is the exact same roll over
and over, just switching a couple chords up [F]
here.
And then for the right hand, it just does that roll, repeats it over and over.
And after it's done it, I think, two times, then you switch to the next finger on the
left hand, and you do it two more times, and so on.
So it'd sound like this.
[Cm] [B]
[Eb]
[A]
[Cm] [Eb]
And do it up tempo.
[Cm] [B]
[Eb] [Cm] [Eb]
I think those are about the only backwards rolls I know.
