A [Em] song that I wrote when I was a
a tune that I wrote when I was [Bb] in Northern Ireland for the first time, [Gb] which is about 15 years [G] ago.
[D]
[A] I was [N] invited to be at a world music festival.
It was a seven day long festival where the musicians played in a different venue.
The audience would just kind of follow whoever they wanted to go see that night.
And to kick the festival off, the promoters decided to offer a free concert in the city square on the first day of the festival, in the afternoon.
And the idea was to generate a little [B] interest, and people could hear the different acts [N] playing.
And so it was a great idea.
Two thousand people showed up.
The city square was brilliant.
But as luck would have it, I followed a 15 piece African band.
I mean, you know, double drummers, triple electric guitars, singers, dancers.
I mean, they let the two thousand people levitate.
You know, and I had to follow them.
I mean, I didn't want to hear myself after that.
You can be sure they didn't want to hear me either.
I felt like such a piece of wonder bread.
Standing there, kind of spongy, and not much nutrition.
So I was very nervous, because it was actually kind of hostile.
They wanted more of the African band, and the deal was 15-20 minutes tops, get off stage.
Done.
So I'm there, and I'm like, oh my gosh.
The treatment [Em] was awful.
[A] So [G] I'm thinking [Bb] like [N] that, and I'm like, well, I don't know if they'd do a really big concert, but they had these huge speakers to the right and left of the stage.
They're kind of in front of you, so they put speakers along the floor of the stage.
But the level was fine.
So the guy running the sound was way out in the middle of the square, with this little tent.
And he could speak to me through a microphone that only I could hear.
So I'm standing there sort of nervously looking around, and I hear this voice.
Alright there, Brooks!
We're so glad that you're here.
Just play a bit on the guitar.

[A] [Em] [E] [A] It was going [N] on like that.
And I finally stopped, and I said, well, how was that?
And the whole front of the crowd stood up and went, yay!
I realized we were away, and the gig had started.
He had flipped the switch as if that was my first [Am] song.
[N] But the irony of the whole thing was for the rest of the week, people came up to my gigs at the different venues, and they said, play that one you started with in the square!
[Abm] That [Em] was brilliant!
The rest I could do without.
[A]
[G] Anyway, [N] so the joke throughout the week was,
[E]
this is what I ended up [N] composing.
Out of those new-me moments.
It's called The Belfast Blues.
