So I love this song for its dark minor melody.
I love this song because it has a lot of references to wild animals.
And I'm privileged to live when I'm not out traveling and playing for folks like y'all in the evenings.
When I'm home, I live in the middle of 30 acres of old-growth forest with a salmon stream running right through the middle.
Eagles in the trees, deer and elk, and black bear and mountain lions in the hills around me.
And the final reason I love this song is perhaps the reason I love it the most.
It's because even though it's a song about dying, called When I Go,
he's not going gentle into that good night like Dylan Thomas talked about.
He's going down swinging.
I dedicate this to the memory of one of the finest songwriters we've ever had.

[D] [Em] Oh come, [Bm] lonely hunter, [Em] chieftain [D] and king, I [Em] will fly [D] like the falcon when [Em] I go.
Bear me, [Bm] my brother, under [D] your wing, I'll [Em] be struck till the [D] lightning [Em] when I go.
[G] I will come along like the thunder, drumming [D] about the storm of war,
twisting [C] colors from the dust and [Em] blood up from the prairie floor.
[G] I will sweep the fog before me like a [D] gale out on the snow,
and the [C] wind will long recount the story of [D] reverence and glory when [Em] I go.
Strange [Bm] spirit, dancer, [D] nimble and thin, I [Em] will leap like [D] coyote when [Em] I go.
[Bm] Tireless and [Em] transcendent, [D] mere skin, [Em] I will run [D] like the gray wolf [Em] when I go.
[G] I will climb and rise at daybreak, [D] I will kiss the sky at noon,
raise [Am] my yearning voice at midnight to [Em] my mother in the moon.
I will [G] make delay among defeat [D] and draw the chorus slow,
send [Am] mysteries down the wire and up, [C] someone [D] wise is listening [Em] when I go.
