[E] They named their band after a Toledo [Bm] steamroller company.
Buffalo [E] Springfield [A] was born.
We really believed at that time that there was no competition [B] but the Beatles.
[E] That was who we were, we really figured that we were in competition with the Beatles.
We thought we were, [B] we thought we were that [F] good.
Dewey Martin, Bruce [A#] Palmer and a young Canadian named [F] Neil Young.
[N] While the band was supporting their second [F] album, Buffalo Springfield Again,
[A#] bassist Bruce Palmer was busted [F] for marijuana possession twice in a single [A#] evening.
The Canadian was [F] ultimately [Gm] deported.
[F] The band's engineer, [Gm] Jim Messina, replaced him.
Jim and [F] his Buffalo Springfield bandmates [Gm] released Last Time Around in 1968.
[F] Ironically, the album would also mark the last time around for the band.
[A] [E]
I knew there [D] were problems [E] with personalities in the [A] group.
[E] After three [A] albums in just 19 months together, the members of Buffalo Springfield went their [E] separate ways.
Richie Furet and Jim Messina formed [F#] a new band.
They called themselves [A] Poco.
Jimmy [E] and I just really thought about the idea, look, we want to continue something, we want to do something.
Let's cross country music with rock and roll.
The band never achieved mass [Em] appeal.
By [Cm]
[A] 1973, both Jim [D] Messina and [A] Richie Furet had left the band.
[E] I wanted to be a rock and roll star.
And I wanted to be a rock and [F#] roll star in the [A] same light that I saw a lot of my [E] friends.
You know, Steve, Stills, Neil [A] Young.
[B] That list also included Richie's old buddy, Jim Messina.
In [Em] 1972, Jim formed a successful collaboration with [E] songwriter [C] Kenny Loggins.
And it's all because your mama [G] don't [F] dance and your daddy don't [C] rock and roll.
Loggins and Messina released [Dm] nine albums [C] and scored hits with Danny's song and Your Mama [F] Don't Dance.
But after [Am] seven years together, Jim Messina once again walked away.
I [F] was exhausted.
My marriage was not working.
[C] I felt that it was important [Dm] to [D] take some time out for that, take some time [C] out for myself.
So where [A#] are the members of Buffalo [C] Springfield now?
The Lord is great and greatly [G] to be praised.
If anybody would have told me [Dm] that I'm going to be doing today what I'm doing,
that I'm going to be pastor in a [F] church in Boulder,
[A] you [D] know, when I was really striving to be a rock and roll star,
I would have laughed at them and said, you're out of your [A] mind.
[D] Since 1982, Richie has been a [G] pastor at the Calvary Chapel in Boulder, [Dm] Colorado, and continues [E] to make music.
[B] I went insane [E] like a smoke ring day [B] when the wind blow.
He released [E] In My Father's House, an album of [B] contemporary Christian music.
[E] [G#m] Nothing topped the [C#m] recognition Richie received when Buffalo [F#] Springfield was inducted into [A] the Rock and Roll Hall of [E] Fame in 1997.
[Am] [F] In [G] 1999, fellow Springfield bandmates Stephen Stills and [A] Neil Young briefly [F] reunited with [G] CSNNY.
Both bass player Bruce Palmer [A] and drummer Dewey Martin [C] are [F] semi-retired.
[G] As for Jim Messina, he's come to the aid of his fellow [Am] artist.
He started [F] the Songwriters [G] Performance Workshop.
We work on the [Am] lyrics, we work on [G] the melodies.
At the end of the workshop, we usually do a concert in the round, [Am] which is open to the [F] public.
Nothing [C] through [D] it I see [Em] right through the paper [A] thin soul.
Jim is also raising his son, Julian.
[G] [D]
[A] [G] I've been raising [A] a son as a single parent for [D#] about [D] six years, and [F#m] that has been a [G] real [D] [A] challenging but enjoyable [G] experience.
[D] Jim Messina and Richie Fure [A]
have found peace.
Would I like to have a hit [D] record?
Well, I'd still like [A] to be out there and [Dm] play to people, those live [F#m] audiences.
Yeah, I still do [G] have my heart's desire to [D] get out and to still do that.
But you know what?
I have had a life [C] that has been blessed.
