[E] [E]
[B] [B] [E] [D#]
[A] [E]
[G#m] [F#] [E]
[F#m] [A] [A]
[C#] [B]
Well, East Coast girls are hip, I [F#] really dig those styles they [A]
wear.
[E] And the Southern girls, with the way they talk, they [F#] knock me out when I'm down there.
[B] The Midwest farmer's daughters really [F#] make you feel alright.
[A]
And [E] the Northern girls, with the way they kiss, they [F#] keep their boyfriends warm at night.
[B] I wish they all [C#m] could be California, [A] I wish they all could [Bm] be California,
[G] I wish they all [Am] could be California [B] girls.
California [N] Girls was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love,
and it was recorded and released by the Beach Boys in 1965 on the album Summer Days and Summer Nights.
It got as high as number three on the Billboard charts.
In this lesson, I'll be introducing the eight different triads that are used.
In addition to that, there are a few chords that are minor seven chords,
so I'll talk about how to form a minor seven chord.
And there's at least one chord that uses a different bass note from the chord,
and so I'll be talking about the subject of slash chords.
[G] So A slash B means that A is above [B] B, and so what that means is there's an [A] A chord,
A, C sharp, an E, a one, three, five, over a B.
So meaning my left hand is playing a B.
As we usually [N] do, I'll first go through the entire song playing all the chords in their root position,
and then we'll spend some time talking about how to move from chord to chord,
taking advantage of nearest inversions, which will make the chords a little bit easier to play,
and it'll also make it sound quite a bit [B] smoother.
Now, when we go to E chord, however, from this A chord to the E chord,
we are going to take advantage of the fact that the E note is [A] in an A chord, and it's also in an E [E] chord.
[A] And what we're going to do is we're going to say that this [F#] E note is on the top of the A,
[N] and we're going to keep it on the top when we make an E chord.
So an E chord is an E, a G sharp, and a B.
[G] So what I'm going to do is, instead of moving my hand [A] up here,
with the [C#] bottom part of my right hand, I'm going to [E] do the G sharp and the B.
In the [E] advanced song-specific technique section of the lesson,
I'll talk about the intro, which [F] is actually done with quite a few instruments,
but I'll give you some clues on how to play it on the piano.
And we'll also talk about the bass line, the dum-ba-dee-da dum-ba-dee-da,
and how to do that as we move from chord to chord.
And we'll talk about the different rhythms in the song,
[N] including the way to end the verses on the way into the chorus.
Bum, bum-bum.
I'll show you how to think about that.
It hits on two, and then and four.
[F#] One, two, three, and four.
