My grandfather was a cantor and it was his legacy that inspired me to follow his footsteps.
Two years ago, when my grandmother passed, my mom found an old tape in her house when she was
cleaning up and it's a bootleg recording of my grandfather on his deathbed chanting some
high holiday prayers, including the Nusach, the way of recitation of the prayer Ochillah
on page 153.
I want to play this a little bit of you so you can hear my grandfather's voice. Oh
Born in 1925 in Hungary, he survived the death camps [B] and after being liberated from [D] Mauthausen,
he immigrated to Israel where he had to make a living as a farmer and then as a businessman.
His life circumstances denied him appropriate, proper cantorial education, but he still used his
gifts and the melodies he learned in the old country to build community, to connect with
people through music.
[B]
[Gb] He led services in Israel and in Europe and he officiated in life [A] cycle
events and he taught hundreds of B'nai Mitzvah students.
He was a pious Jew who really loved
people [Db] and music.
Unfortunately, in 1986 he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away shortly
[N] afterwards at the age of 60.
It was very important for my grandfather that the Nusach, the way
that we sing the melodies for the holidays, will be kept within the family.
And it's interesting
that the prayer Ochillah is in a nutshell is everything that being a cantor is all about.
I will sing your praises amongst your congregation.
Adonai sefatai tiftach, God open up my lips.
Texts that we all say every time we open and close the Amida, it's part of this prayer
and it's really what it's all about.
I was only five years old when my grandfather
passed, but his music and his legacy is very much alive in our family.
I want to call
[C] my sons Yonatan and Daniel to come help me lead the prayer Ochillah on [F] page 153.
