This one is actually my guitar.
It's a featherlight alder body and
I bought it because of just an amazingly
resonant live
Stratocaster I've got this little trick I do when guitars are hanging on the wall
I walk up to them in a music store
So I play the B [B] string like this then I feel this lower bout down here when you plug it in
Just acoustically if you play a B string like that and you get some you feel it moving you feel some wiggle in the body
You know, you got a live one because the strings are transferring more
Vibration in the body and the whole thing's reacting together.
I also bought this guitar because the three pickups here work so well together
One thing I look for on a strat is that I don't want the neck pickup and the middle pickup to sound like one guitar
But when you go to the back pickup, it sounds like something completely different, you know
So the nice thing about this one and about most old
Stratocasters in general is that the next the neck pickup has got this big [E] fat throaty bluesy tone
[Em]
[A] The middle pickup on the other hand has a glassy or kind of pretty tone
[Db]
[B]
Good for rhythm [Gm] guitar and things like that
The back pickup is kind of sticking with the Telecaster vibe, which is a little bit more twangy and country sounding so, you know
[A] [Gb]
[A] Get [Gb] that Telecaster sound although not quite as bright and twangy and then years later along come the
The the sort of aftermarket guys and they developed the five-way switch so you could get in between the two pickups and get this
Nice clucky sound there and then a hollow or more mellow tone with [C] the middle positions between these two [A] pickups, so
[F] [Eb]
[E] [Cm]
[Gb] Really is a great sounding instrument.
The the other thing is that that Leo Fender introduced here is this floating vibrato bridge
Is it the tremolo or the vibrato?
What did they call this?
It's it it really is a vibrato, but Leo called it the [C] tremolo.
Yeah funny enough on the amps
He was calling it the vibrato, but it was a tremolo on the amps.
He had it reversed.
I never know
So yeah fender called that their tremolo system, but it was it but it is a vibrato system Yeah
so that it was so it was supposed to float meaning you were supposed to be able to pull up on the bar and have
the pitch rise and pull push down on the bar and
What what a lot of people do [Am] is you set it right down on the deck here
So you can't pull up, but I've always believed that you should be able to pull up and down.
I like to hear I
[A] [B] Like to hear that shake, you know, just a little bit of shake.
It's very musical and
[Em] I actually set mine up to where the G string
[Gm]
Goes up a minor third.
[G] I
Set it [Gb] up to that and the B string goes up a whole step and the E string goes up a half step
That way I have these intervals
[E]
I know exactly where I'm going when I pull on it, and I think that's a much more musical approach
I also look for the broo.
So when I'm playing a chord like [A] I
Look, I look for
[B] Try to get as close [Ab] to
[A] That half step [E] depression as possible.
It's not the easiest thing to do
You have to spend a lot of time with the claw getting the angle just right because spring tension on the block
Should be as close to equal of the string tension on the saddles
So springs should equal strings in terms of the tension being pulled.
So
the Stratocaster is
Ground zero electric guitar for me for me.
It's my favorite one the one I go to first the one I take on the road
no matter what and
Just I think the greatest guitar ever designed.
I mean if when you consider they're still making them 50 years 51 years later
It's and with really no changes, it's amazing.
He got it right the first time
