Hi there, welcome to OnlineLessonVideos.com. I'm Ian Walsh.

Today we're going to be working on a
fiddle tune in the key of A,
which is a great key for the fiddle, one of my favorites.
You have an open A
and an open E string that you get to play a lot on.
And in this first part of this tune
we're going to use
heavy bowing on the A and the E string.
The second part of the tune goes into A minor.
It's not too [D] much of a difference from
the first key A because we're not playing an A major in the first key, we're playing an A modal.
So that's with the G in the natural position for the A.
So it's pretty much
A, A minor, A modal, all the way around.
But here we go with the lesson.
I'm going to show you a sample of my version of
Cattle in the Cane
and I hope you enjoy it.

Okay, I hope you got a good idea of what the tune is going to sound like and what we're
going to be working on today.
I'm going to start off by teaching you the first couple lines in the first part.
We start off on the C sharp, okay?
Right here on the A string.
[A] It's your second finger.
We're going to be playing some Es,
[F#] an F sharp, an open E, C sharp, and A [A] again.
So we start off like this with these notes, follow along.
[E] And again, sliding into my C sharp there.
[D]
One more time.
[E] [D] [D]
And you'll notice right away I'm using that G right in the low position, right on
top of my first [A#] finger, as close as I can get it
to my first finger, right on top of it.
That's a G natural.
[D] [E] Okay, so let's just play one more
time, the clean notes, and then we're going to start blending.
So we play C sharp to E, two, and we're going to start right on the downbeat.
So we have one,
two, [D] three, four.
Now what [B] you can start doing here is blending
your open E with all these notes right from the get-go.
So play a C sharp and an E.
You get a nice [E] double stop there.
You can play an open A and an open E.
[Am] You get a nice fifth [Dm] double stop there.
Add in your F sharp
[D] [E] with the open A, and you [G] have a nice double stop there that's more of a D.
But since we're playing these notes quickly, it works well on the key of A.
[A]
So that's the sound we're going to be trying to get.
[F#] So using this, you can really start attacking this tune very aggressively right from [A] the
And you can continue on with the notes and continue blending the E and the A strings together.
So we [D] have
And I do a little bit of selective blending.
I think I was out of that for about three notes.
The C A C.
[F] And then I got [A] back into it again.
A couple of times through that, let's just cycle through it, get it into your head.
One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.
[E] One, two, three, [A] four.
[D]
Okay, for the next section, we're going to be going into the key of G.
