I was 17 when I first got a guitar, an old Hohner guitar my mama found out of a pawn shop in South Irving, Texas.
That's one of the best sounding little guitars I ever met.
I need to actually take mine in and get [Gb] it fixed up.
[Ab] J.J. Cale made his sound [Db] amazing.
They got [Eb] just a one of a kind sound, these old throwaways.
He was playing it through some tiny ancient amp and it was great.
I mean, maybe I'll play it.
Good amps and whatever you want.
[Ab] You may need new strings.
[Eb] Oh no, I like them old like that.
They're all set [Ab] if you want shitty old [Gb] strings.
[Gm] My [Db] mama sang, she didn't sing professionally or anything.
She [G] sang in the kitchen, she sang in the car with me, we sang together.
It wasn't any kind of formal anything.
She just [Ab] was a really good natural singer [F] and I would scream at the top of my [Gb] lungs with her and that's what we did.
So she tried to get me to play the piano when I was young but I couldn't focus on it.
I mean when I was like 8, 9, 10 years old but I could not focus.
By the time I was 17 and I was going through a lot of stuff, I think she knew I needed an outlet so that I wouldn't end up veering down the wrong path.
It was great timing for [F] that.
[G] [C]
[Am]
[C]
[F] [G] [C]
I was scared to death to even play in front of anybody but the first thing I had was that creative [G] spark to write.
It was a big step for me [C] to grow up enough to say, alright, no more street stuff.
Let's figure out how to record.
I need to record [Am] myself.
The better I can [C] record myself, the more likely I'm going to attract like-minded people [F] that can [G] help me attain this [C] vision.
I think the best thing we've ever done is probably these two numbers we've done [Am] today.
I've got five albums out.
[G] So this is a lot of [C] fun.
We come down here with the whole idea of doing these two other cover [G] songs that [C] Colin had charted out but he should know by now that whatever I tell him we're going to do, we never do.
[G] [C] I like the [A] idea of being [Am] inspired in the moment [C] in the way that the guys record.
When we're all [D] fresh on something that [G] nobody was putting too much time into, [C] you get this magic and it tends to work out.
[Am]
[C]
[F] [G] [C]
[F] If I were patient, I need not [C]
worry.
If I'm hurting, [G] so to say.
I [C] had myself a river of sorrow.
I lost my name in [Am] a battle of youth.
[C] I had no one who I could talk to.
[F] A life of [G] sin and all [C] I knew.
A life [F] of sin and [G] all [C] I knew.
[F] A life of sin [G] and was all that I [C] knew.
