[C] Welcome back, folks.
You know, our backstage pass this time is with Charlie Robinson.
Now, he's definitely an artist that walks to his own beat and makes no apologies for it.
It's a big part of what his fans are attracted to.
His 2013 studio [Gb] album, High Life, is a collection of tunes from his favorite [G] songwriters,
including his sister Robin Ludwig [A] and brother Bruce Robinson.
Now, he sat down with us to talk up the album.
Well, lately her dress has [D] been a mess.
They [E] talk about taxes, drug [A] habits, and wine.
Well, they say her own mother, [D] well, she don't even love her.
[E] But still her fans write [A] letters that say,
Mama, you're a star, [D] and you shine.
[E] Lord knows why, God like [A] and divine.
Oh, we all want to be loving her, [D] and we all want to be needing her.
[E] It's if we'd turn [A] to shine.
Beautiful Day ended [Em] up kind of being deemed [D] the divorce record, you know,
just like with all these and everything.
I was like, you know what, the next record I'm [Em] just going to completely [G] have fun,
[D] just all these songs that I've always loved [C] and wanted to play on stage
and [D] not worry about, you know, writing [Em] such a serious record.
I want it to [D] be just the opposite of that.
I want it [G] to be just [C] a fun record, a record where all the [G] songs I know
will already lend themselves to be, you know, staples on stage.
[F] To an empty [C] motel room, behind a truck stop,
with the lights off, saying, Darling, [F] now don't stop.
[C] [G] Marcellina, señorita, so [F] nice to meet you.
[C] Can you help [G] me all out of [C] this blue?
We went back to where I recorded my very first record back in, like,
just 1994 or 93 or something like that [F] at Cedar Creek Studios.
Very [Am] organic, just went in there, and it kind of didn't have much of a schedule.
And the way we recorded [F] it was kind of the way I went about picking the [C] songs and everything.
It's just like, okay, I don't want this to be on a [G] timeline.
You know, it's just like whenever we [C] feel like going in, we're going to go in.
And I've kind of gotten to a place where it's [F] just like, man,
I'm going to [Am] do stuff whenever I feel like it.
And [G] it's a good [C] feeling to be at that point in your career where you [G] don't
really feel like you're [C] trying to bust into anything or keep up [G] with anything
or [Dm] anything like that.
[Bb] You establish yourself enough to where you don't just feel that [F] pressure all
the time to be just pushed, and you can just kind of do things at your own speed.
You know, Doug Somp has always been one of my biggest influences.
There's a song on there called Nuevo Laredo, which has got a real [Bb]
up-tempo
Mexican beat to it.
Nuevo Laredo, Nuevo Laredo, I [F] hear you calling back to me.
[Eb] In town, [Bb] on Escalante.
Girls from Texas, Rikuto song, which is another [Fm] very up-tempo,
like I said earlier, I [G] wanted to do these just really fun [C] songs to play on stage.
Well, that's the way the [G] girls are from Texas.
That's the way the girls [C] are from Texas.
That's the way the [F] girls are from Texas.
