[Eb] My parents told me I had to get a job.
So I went to a music, the only actual local music store there was around where I grew up.
And I asked them if I could work there and they said, we don't have any money.
And I said, well, can I get something?
So I was able to tell my parents I had a job.
I wasn't making any money, but I was able to get a,
finally work off enough to where I could get a Fender Strat.
And I wanted one with a bar.
When they finally said go ahead and pick one, they had about a dozen Strats.
And they all had bars on them, except for one.
And it just sounded so much better than the others.
I'm fortunate that I decided to get the one Strat without the bar
because it sort of determined my [A] style.
[Db] By the time Eddie came out and was playing,
everybody with Strats started like buying pick guards, cutting them up,
throwing a humbucker in there, because that was a great idea.
The single coils are way too [Ab] weak to match a humbucker.
So I started experimenting with different pickups.
I found that I like the humbucker quite a bit further up this way than most people do.
Because Jimi Hendrix always got a good sound out of his bridge pickup.
And I always thought that was weird until I examined it and I thought about it.
I [F] said, okay, he plays it upside down.
So instead of it being slanted this way,
according to his strings, it's slanted this way.
And I like that whole idea because in general,
I like the top treble [Cm] strings to be a little [G] fatter sounding.
And I like the wound strings to have a little more attack, a little [Db] more sharpness.
When [A] I moved to L.A., all the other kids at school had really cool looking guitars.
Either brand new guitars or [E] custom guitars.
Because by then, everybody was into the custom thing because of [Ab] Eddie.
I felt a little out of place because I had a sunburst Strat.
Maybe I should have waved that flag high, yeah.
But I felt like a poor kid.
And my roommate at the time was a painter in the Charvel paint room.
And for my birthday, because he knew I felt a little embarrassed about the guitar.
So he offered for my birthday to paint the guitar at Charvel.
He gave it a white with a purple pearl [G] overlay on it.
For some reason, I didn't ask him to, but for some reason, he cut down the headstock.
And painted that too.
So then I didn't have to feel like the poor kid anymore.
Then I was one of the cool kids.
I guess what really set it off was a black pickguard.
Because you're used to seeing white Strats, but with a white pickguard.
And I preferred rosewood necks, which I would assume is a little less popular than maple necks.
So that combination.
Yeah, nobody else really grabbed it.
It did become kind of an [Db] iconic look for me.
This is the very first one they made me.
They had a pretty good idea of what I wanted.
For this one, I did want to try some other peculiar.
Well, it has a mahogany neck, which I've never seen.
Somebody must have done it before.
But I've never seen a [Ab] Strat with a mahogany neck.
And it's got an ebony fingerboard.
So I asked for all those things.
It's got the [Eb] fat frets up to the 12th fret.
And then skinny frets after that.
Because I was used to playing a Fender scale.
It always felt like there wasn't enough wood under my fingers when I was up here.
[Db] It always felt like all metal up there.
So I asked for the skinnier ones.
I like the way that feels better.
[Abm] And they made this guitar.
And actually, by the time I got it, there was only one song left.
It hadn't been recorded for Red Dragon Cartel.
When I did get it, I did like it so much that I played [Ab] it.
It's undeceived.
It's basically the guitar undeceived.
[G] When people mention my name, they know my playing.
[Ab] They almost always say, the tongue thing.
And that's what it is.
It came about because Warren's fingers are longer than mine.
He started doing some ridiculous stupid stretches.
Like, let me see you do that.
And I knew there was [Db] no way I could.
But not to be outdone, I'm there.
[Ab] What do you think of that?
And he laughed.
I laughed.
And then I kind of [Ab] thought about it.
And I looked at him, and he said, you should do that.
And he thought he was going to one-up me.
I didn't let it happen.
[Db] Being back with Charvel, it feels [Gb] really good.
