We went along with Cheap Trick as the hard rock [A] band made a tour swing through Texas.
[E]
[A] [F#] It feels great.
It's like being at a big party.
It gives you a thrill when you know you've won the audience over.
[E] [F] [D] We're [F#] musicians and music fans first.
[D] Our band is.
[G#m] The reason we do it is because we get up there every night [Em] and we play for you and for ourselves and we try to have [E] a good time doing it.
[Em]
[C#] I love what [D] I do.
Yeah, very much.
As much as we're on the road, you really have to love what you do.
[F] [B]
[Em] With the traveling [G#] and touring and being in the studio, I'm gone from my house at least [F] 300 days a year.
I've [C#] crisscrossed the states so many times.
We're in Texas here.
I've seen it so many times I know that we hardly ever look.
I'm a sucker.
[E] I have a
[A] stomach.
[N]
[D#]
[E] But Jim Van Dyke is my Rick [C#] Nielsen, Skellington outfits.
[E] What a waste of money.
We're close, but our friendship is based on a mutual respect for music in general and because we have a lot in common.
I'm a big fan of
[A] Rick.
[E] [F#] Great.
He's as good as me.
[A] Don't talk.
Thanks, [F#] Rick.
Playing rock and roll is pretty much fun.
[N] I started out as a hobby and now it's what I've done all of my life, really, since I was [F] 15.
I [F#] met Rick when I was in fourth grade at the sixth grade graduation.
Rick was playing drums and [G#] I was like, oh, that's the guy.
[F#] He got in a band and I got in a band and we ended up together after high school because there was no one left in town to [B] play with.
So we got in a rock [A] band together.
All the good guys that were [G] left kind of [F#m] got together.
Ended up to be Chief [A#] Trick.
Drum service.
Mmm.
Good, huh?
Lots of good stuff here.
[B] Throwing a case?
We'll take it.
I just bought a guitar.
Oh, my God.
[N]
No problem.
[F#] [E]
[F]
[N] I was 12 years old when The Beatles came out and [C#] it [F#m] dawned on me I wanted to [C#] become a drummer.
I started when I was probably about 14 years old.
[B]
And just played some carnivals and some other bands.
I was always the guy that owned all the equipment in the band so that people couldn't fire me.
The other people in the band couldn't fire me.
You gotta learn how to throw your junk around the room.
[A] It's very appropriate.
You gotta learn how to mess the bed up without even getting [G] in it.
[D] Know how to throw the stuff [Cm] all over the floor.
[C]
[E] Of course you have to have [C] sunglasses.
You can't be in rock and roll [Cm] without a couple pairs of these.
[B]
Rock stewards are rock stars.
[E]
I'm a musician at work.
That's [C#] how I see it.
And some people [A#] work in banks and some people sell cars.
I play music.
So it's no big [E] deal.
[B]
[D]
[Em] [G]
[E] I do all my own bookkeeping.
I [F#] was a math major in school.
[B] I figured why [D#m] pay some accountant to do stuff that [B] I can screw up for free?
You [G#]
[B] [F#]
[C#]
don't need the extra [E] starch.
That's one rule [D] of the road.
You don't need the top bun.
Hey everybody, this is Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick.
Tomorrow night, [G#] KLAQ, The Coliseum, [B] El Paso.
[F#] [F#m]
[E] I think we've weathered the [F#] last 14 years we've been together now because our goals are similar.
And we have a lot of fun.
We really have a lot of fun and always have.
Our goals are [E] to be able to make a living playing music, being working musicians, making records, doing videos, traveling around the world, playing for people.
[G] [Em] Trying to be [A] successful at [D] what we [G] do.
[A] [F#m] [G] [A] [D]
