I was up in Winnipeg at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, which is a very cool folk festival.
A true world music folk festival.
People [E] from everywhere in the world.
Instruments you've never seen before.
It's really, really cool.
It's a very cool event, but the time that I wrote this song that I was there,
it was raining like you've only seen it rain on television.
And it was just unbelievable rain.
Everything was just a mud fest.
I remember I had to buy a [Bbm] Winnipeg Folk Festival raincoat,
which was basically like a trash bag with [B] a hole cut in it.
And that made me feel just extra pretty.
And [F] I was [E] very
you would never know it to look at me.
But I am really fastidious with my stuff.
I am.
My friends laugh at me about it.
I mean, I am
I guess it's OCD or something.
I am.
My stuff is just
I'm not very tidy, but my stuff is.
[Eb] I actually am a very [B] clean, tidy person.
And oh boy, I just [C] always wipe off my guitar.
So I was not happy.
They drive you around on the go, flashing up into your [Dbm] face.
And there's just [G] mud and crap on everything.
And it was really disgusting.
And [D] I was a little cranky.
[Em]
I was hanging out with my wonderful friend, the fabulous Patty Norton,
who was so nice [N] all the time.
Patty was really nice.
I was like, God damn it, Patty.
Can't believe you're fucking mad at me.
I was like, I'm doing okay.
Fuck my couch.
And she's just been always so nice.
And so she and I, we had a workshop together, Patty and I.
And I looked at our [Bb] schedules, and it's like songwriters' workshops or something like [Db] that.
[E] Two to three.
Workshop results.
I'm like, oh my God.
You don't think they're just going to write a fucking song in the hour off, do you?
Well, sure enough, that was the plan.
And the Winnipeg people are very country, you know.
They [Eb] have bricking stocks on their feet and hands.
[N]
They're like sitting in piles of round rice.
Which just didn't sense me the other way, you know what I mean?
So [D] we [Gm] go to the first [C] workshop.
While we are taking turns, the four songwriters and the thing, singing,
the audience is passing around a clipboard, writing down their ideas for songs for us to write.
And I'm like, I've noticed [D] something.
[C] So the clipboard came back, and among the suggestions on the clipboard [Bb] was the following.
Cow pattern clothes.
[Bbm] What the hell is there to [E] say?
Once you said cow pattern [N] clothes, I think you've covered the subject.
I was like, gee whiz, I'm surprised Irving Berlin didn't snatch that up.
And so I said to the other songwriters, I said, I want this one, I want cow pattern clothes.
They're like, sure, you got it.
So we get in this golf cart, and [Db] they take us back to the, you know,
[A] where you hang out under a bunch of stupid songs.
And [C] while we were going back to the tent, the sun [Ab] came out.
And we were like sore afraid.
You know, everybody was like, who is that?
We hadn't seen her for so long.
And so, sorry, that's sore afraid, thank you.
And so in that [Eb] moment when the sun came out, I got the, I got the,
[B]
[C] [E] Thank you.
Is that open [D] too?
[Eb] You think that'll be alright?
You should probably close it in case.
[Ab] It's the bear.
[Em] So when the sun came out, I got a little [N] flash of inspiration for my song,
which I'm now going to attempt to do, and I don't remember how to play [Ab] it or what the words are.
But we won't let that stop us.
[G] Oh, the [Ab] sun is shining in [Bb] the clouds.
Beautiful day for cow [Ab] pattern clothes.
And [Db] if it should [Ab] rain again, then I suppose I [Eb] would get water on [Ab] my cow pattern clothes.
So [Db] get along with the sun.
Don't leave them go be [Ab] your hot one, keep them in the nose.
[Bb] Then I'll lift you higher [Eb] up with cow pattern clothes.
[Db] Do you let the sun so [Ab] far?
Don't you think it flows?
If it rains, it's fine, it stops in a minute.
[Eb] Cow pattern clothes.
[Db] Cow pattern shirts.
[Ab] Cow pattern hats.
[Bb] Cow pattern ball [Eb] gowns.
Cow pattern jockstraps.
[Db] Cow pattern [Ab] cardigans.
Cow pattern [Bb] leotards.
Cow pattern maple [Eb] vests.
Cow pattern knee-highs.
[Ab] Oh, [Eb] cow pattern clothes.
Oh, cow pattern clothes.
Oh, [Ab] cow pattern clothes.
[Eb] Cow pattern, cow pattern.
