Chicken Picking Guitar Lesson - Country - Rock - Shred - hybrid picking chords
Start Jamming...
[Am] [N] Nice!
So what's up you guys?
Marty here with GuitarJams.com. I've got the shredtastic
Brett Papa.
Brett Papa here, also known as Papa Stache, but that's a long story.
They
broke up.
You're paying the Stache alimony, right?
I am.
Too much.
It's a sad thing.
While
the Stache just drives your Lamborghini around with a new face.
I heard, I don't want to
hurt your feelings, but I heard it was like hanging out with Pom Selleck.
Anyway, okay,
so that little
No, you know what's so funny?
That people appreciate this out there, like
how old we're getting.
And I mean, I know we're not like old then, but we're getting
older.
I had a little kid student and I was like, don't you remember Magnum PI?
And he
was like, is that a rapper?
He thought that, because you know, Magnum PI.
Anyway, so you
were just doing, you call that hybrid picking, right?
Yeah.
Or chicken picking or whatever.
Yeah, people have to slow it down to actually see that little shred thing you were doing.
But basically, the hybrid picking is basically a downstroke is your pick.
Yeah, exactly.
The upstroke is your
It'll do like any adjacent strings.
You know, you can combine
it together.
But the down pick and then the up pick would be your middle finger?
Yeah,
you can do, I mean, people get really proficient with it and use all three.
I use usually these
two.
Right.
So on a riff like that, you can use one finger or two.
Okay, so now play the
lick again.
I mean, just the same way, but after we've explained what it is.
So it's
just really awesome.
I'll do it [A] slow.
It's really easy.
[C#] [Am]
[D] So it's [F#] kind of like a pattern
with a little lick in there.
Just do a full speed again.
[A]
Sweet.
Yes, sir.
[D] That's awesome.
I'm sure people would like to see how that's broken down.
So what I think we should do
is probably zoom in.
Let's do it.
I'll just kind of narrate as we check something like
that out.
All right.
I'm a little blinded though by the speed, but you can catch a pick
in your eye.
I better be careful.
[B] [F#]
So do one more time.
So where was that finger part of
it?
[A] So the finger comes in when I switch strings.
[G] [F#]
[A] Okay.
So I go to skip down to the E string.
[G] Okay.
Then you're going to do, [N] you're using your middle finger.
I'd, you know, I tend
to use my ring finger in that situation, but, but so once you get that middle finger on
the seventh fret, that's your, when you, right with your right hand, use your finger.
Exactly.
So, so yeah, do it up to that finger note.
[F#]
[A] Got it.
And okay.
One more time.
[F#]
Okay.
Then
what?
So [Em] [B]
you just use your finger to pick that fifth fret of the high E string.
Right.
So you go
[G] finger, [F#] pull off and then to the eighth fret of the [G] B string.
And then when
you come back down to the high E string fifth fret, I hit it again.
[A]
[F#] Nice.
That's the whole
pattern.
Okay.
So let's see it repeat itself, but nice and slow.
[C#] [E]
So [A] you're using, um, the,
the eight, seven, five on the high E, the eight, seven, five on the B and then the eight,
seven, five on the, on the G also.
Yeah.
You can do that.
[C#] [Am] [C#] And then, [C] yeah, and of course
the, uh, that little hammer on onto the sixth fret.
[Am] [C#]
Cool.
Yeah.
Let's, let's just see that
whole lick nice and slow and then you can shred it a few times.
[A] All right.
[C#]
[A] [B] [Em]
[E] [B] [Am]
[A] [F#] Now, uh,
yeah, blaze through it.
[Am]
[A] [E]
[C#] [F#m] [Am]
[N] Sweet.
Hello.
Hello.
That was very enlightening.
Um, so basically,
so tell me a couple of cats that like are just experts at that style so people can go
explore new music.
Um, you know, Brent Mason is probably the best you'll ever see in your
life.
But Mason Brent Brent, yes.
He's a studio guy.
But, um, if you want to see somebody
do it musically that where you can see it, you know, readily, uh, Brad Paisley is awesome.
He really incorporates a lot of open string runs.
Um, just really cool phrasing.
It's
really musical.
That's really what's really important is a lot of guys can do all the
techniques, but they aren't so musical.
Oh yeah.
Sometimes you don't feel like, you know,
that's some of the stuff I missed with, with some of the shred stuff.
Not all of it.
Not
all of it.
There's all, there's good music really in any, almost any genre.
But I always
gravitate towards feeling a connection somehow.
Sometimes it's not describable, but that
like, you know, you feel some kind of emotional connection that you know they're expressing.
Yeah.
You know, another guy too, um, that does this, um, I know we do a lot of lead
stuff here, but another guy that's very good at doing that kind of stuff, uh, rhythmically
is Jerry Reed.
Really cool lyrics, but he's amazing, amazing guitar player and you can
catch his stuff all over YouTube.
Okay, cool.
Thanks man.
All right.
So Brett Papa, he's
got a YouTube channel called Papa Stache.
I do and I'm going to be posting videos soon
to come.
Cool man.
Cool.
Well, thanks a lot.
Yeah, no worries.
Appreciate it Mr.
Stache.
Absolutely.
Hopefully next time it'll be.
Uh, it's fine.
I still like it.
I miss it,
but, uh, all right, so that's it.
We got obviously guitarjams.com. I'm actually going to leave
a link to my solo techniques DVDs that introduce like those modes.
Yeah.
It's like a beginner
start to mode.
So, you know, people that are exploring this video might be interested
in that.
And, you know, I've had a lot of good feedback on those.
So check those out.
Click the link in the info box.
You can check that out and we'll see you real soon.
