Ok, so we're talking Chuck Berry today and we're looking really at supplying a certain
amount of rhythm and double notes to the lick to make it kind of rock and roll Chuck Berry vibe.
So first of all let's just get ourselves in the picture.
[Bb] We're in Bb blues.
So we're combining
our [Fm] B minor [Eb] [Ab] [Bb] pentatonic shape 1 and our Bb [C] major [D] [G] pentatonic shape 2.
[C] [F] Allowing [Db] us to kind
[Cm] of [Eb] [Bb] [Eb] [G]
double stop all over the place because it kind of covers quite a lot of notes when
you actually combine those two.
So we start by [Bb] sliding into the back of this.
So this
is 6 and 6 and I'm sliding from 5 and then [Ab] I'm going to grab my little finger and this
bit can be quite tricky.
I'm going to just hit the B string 9th fret but leave the 6th
fret under the 1st [Bb] finger.
[Gm] Then I'm going to bring down to [Bb] the 8th fret [Gm] and [Bb]
then back
to the double.
[Ab]
[Gm] [Bb] So make sure you're always hearing the doubles there.
[E] [Bb] I don't want this.
[E] [G] [Fm] I want this.
[E] [Bb] [F] And then at that point I'm actually going to double the 6's on the G [Db] and the B
string.
[Dm] Hammer on to the 7
[Db] [Dm] on [Bb] the G string and then hit the root note creating the kind
of Bb major chord.
[Eb] [Bb] [Db] [Dm] [Bb]
Nice and rhythmical.
If you keep the chord on at the end, [F] bonus.
[Bbm] [Bb]
Then
we're going to go into [B] this.
[Bb]
Now this is subtly hard and I'll tell you why because with these
bends, so I'm in the [Ebm] Bb [Bbm] minor [E] [Bb] shape [Ab] 1 so I'm on the 8th fret and I'm going to [N] bend up a
full tone but it's going to be a very quick bend and it's going to stop very quickly as
well.
Not this, [Bb] not this, this.
It goes up super quick so you hear almost none of the
bend.
And then you grab [F] the double 6's again so that's just going to hit the B and [B] [Bb] the
E string and [F] you do it 3 times.
[Bb]
Very static sound, that's really important.
And then you're
going to hit the [Cm] 8 and 8 on the G and the B string.
[Db] [Dm] 6 and 6 [Db] hammering on the 7, that
major [Bb] 3rd and then the root note.
[Cm] [Bb] [Eb] [Db]
[Bb] So that [C] second half is this.
[Bb] [Cm]
[Db] [Bb]
So [Eb] all [Gb] together [Bb]
[Gm] [Bbm] [Bb]
[Abm] [Bbm] [E] [Bb]
[Cm] [Bb]
[N] and there
we are, we're off on our rock and roll journey.
So that's the lick.
And a couple of little
points to mention just to get that Chuck Berry sound really nice and clear is 1, I
would do the whole thing downstroke, that aggressive rock and roll.
[Bb]
All downstrokes,
just like you would do if you were going
[E] [Eb] [Bb]
Realistically you don't want to break that
rhythm [F] so [Bb]
that you keep the downstrokes, keep it aggressive and keep it within that style.
And always as often as you can take any of your licks and double them up.
So if you've
got a lick that [E] goes like [Eb] this, [Db]
[E] go like this.
[Bb]
And [Dbm] you've got a rock and roll lick for [Cm] nothing.
[Db]
And that's just literally just kind of [C] flanning the fingers, doubling things up, trying sounds
and you'll have that kind of Chuck Berry vibe.
It's very very rhythmical, keeping on the
beat all the time, or sorry, not necessarily on the beat but keeping [Ab] with the beat.
Don't
be going off a beat
[G] [Bb] with those kind of things.
Keeping on a
[Eb]
[C] [Eb] [Bbm]
[E] You can hear I'm on a 1, 2,
3, 4 kind of sound.
And that's absolutely crucial.
So, best of luck with that guys and
I'll speak to you soon.

[E] _ _ _ [Bb] I don't want this.
[E] _ _ [G] _ [Fm] _ I want this. _
[E] _ [Bb] _ _ _ [F] And then at that point I'm actually going to double the 6's on the G [Db] and the B

_ [Dm] _ Hammer on to the 7 _
[Db] _ _ [Dm] _ _ _ on [Bb] the G string _ and then hit the root note creating the kind

[Eb] _ _ [Bb] _ [Db] _ _ [Dm] _ _ [Bb] _

[Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [Cm] _
