[Bm] and then he got a little smoky in the slave 60s.
Yeah, and I didn't want any parts of it.
Yeah, I understand.
Doug, I got to ask you a question.
See if you remember.
What was the first year that you did the Dick Clark show?
Do you remember?
Do you have any idea?
It was 18
Do [D]
you remember?
[Dm] The year?
I think it was 56.
[B] Okay, [D] now
Absolutely, see, you won't [Bm] remember this.
I didn't remember it until today.
A [B] few months ago, Dick Clark dropped a picture off at my office.
I was sitting in a set of drums.
[Bm] Now, is this starting to make sense?
Yes, yes, yes.
And I was saying to Freddie, the chord of it, I says,
you know, [E] that's strange.
So I did a little research.
I'm sitting in a set of drums,
and [Bm] Dick Clark sent this picture of both of us talking.
[B] Dick Clark said, who are these two young guys?
Clark looked exactly the same today as he did then.
I was on his show, and I introduced
I played a little drum solo,
and he came over and said,
Johnny, I understand you're going to introduce
somebody [Bm] in American dance.
And I said, yes, sir.
And who did [C] I introduce?
He said, yours truly.
[B]
[Bm] [E]
[Bb] [Bm] [D] Yeah, I was a little scored, he said.
[E] I was hardly nationally known,
but Dick and [B] I get people who've been on national television
to introduce new people.
This kept going through my [Bm] mind, and sure enough

when you do that and you can't get up.
You gotta bring [D] it in.
Yeah.
[Bm] Yeah, really good.
Somebody told me you [B] usually, when you perform,
insist on getting paid cash up front.
Well, not cash, but things as good as cash.
Like cash is check.
Well, I'll tell you what, I had a lot of albums
waiting two [Bm] and a half hours for them to count monies,
and then they make mistakes.
So up front, and then a lot of people,
a lot of the promoters add taxes from the government.
Then they're supposed to, so up front is [E] better.
I know a lot of people who [Bm] go on tour
but have that same problem.
You [E] go in and it [Bm] takes them a while before they get off.
[B]

I have, [B] Johnny.
In fact, [Bm] one time, and even John Lennon said
he had the same thing happen to him one time
in Mineola, Mississippi.
I drove down there with a big bus,
had a lot of overhead [E] with the band.
[Bm] Yeah, that was big band.
And we played a New Year's Eve thing.
And at 12, we played from [B] 9 to [Bm] 12.
Or rather from 8 to 12, four hours, union thing.
At 12, I told them one,
I made sure I gave them a good four hours.
I quit.
Shotgun.
Play until 1230.
[D] The party's still going [Bm] on.
Mississippi, you played at 1230. Yeah.

playing Carl [B] Hogan's riffs, who was Louis Jordan.
