[N] Hi good people it's Chickenbone John here and I'm here to tell you a little bit about
how you can make your own cigar box guitar with me at one of my classes and learn to
play it for just £20.
£20 and you get all the kit of parts, all the components you need to build one of these.
I bring all the tools and the expertise, you leave with a finished guitar and the basics
of how to play it.
I can't say it fairer than that.
Okie doke, so what's the catch?
There's no catch.
This has been developed using a very simple kit of parts and I've built hundreds of these
with adults and children and it's a guaranteed sure fire thing that everybody gets.
Very very simple box, these are all made the same so everybody ends up with the same thing
and it's consistent and there's no problems.
Very very simple neck with some of the work done on it so you just need to do a little
bit, don't worry if you don't need any musical skills, you don't need any woodworking skills,
it's very very simple.
We go through the whole thing and you learn and acquire new skills.
You get the various bits and pieces, machine heads, your nuts and bolts and screws and
also an electric piezo pickup and jack output so you can plug this thing in and annoy the
neighbours and annoy your children or parents or whatever.
Set of strings, everything you need to finish one of these guitars.
Here's another one.
These have just been tricked up with a little bit of graphics that I've printed up.
You can do the same, you can paint them, graphic them up and then because you get the basic
skills of how to do this, there's the basic one that I made earlier on that's about three
quarters of the way to being finished from one of my last workshops.
But you get the skills and the knowledge of how these things are put together so then
if you want to go home and do something a bit more fancy and you want to put a really
nice hardwood neck into it, you've got the basics of how to do it.
If you wanted to put a fretboard and frets on, you can do that.
We don't do this at these classes because this is a quick and easy one day course where
we come in and in less than a day you build your guitar and you go home with it.
And again if you want to get yourself a really nice, go down to your local tobacconist if
one exists or troll around on the internet, [G] get yourself a really nice cigar [F] box.
You can take the thing apart, [N] fit it back together again so you get a lot of skills
and you learn the basics of how to play [Eb] these fantastic little instruments.
[N] So I tend to do these in association with festivals and other events.
If you fancy doing this, get in touch with me because I will come and do it for you.
If we can get enough people to do it, we can come and do it for you.
Whether it's just in your area at a youth club, school [Eb] club or whatever, if we can find
a suitable venue, church hall, [Ab] room above a pub or whatever, I will come and do this for you.
I just [B] need around, about [N] a dozen people is great.
We can make it work if it's less than that.
If you get too many, well there's no real limit on numbers because I can bring an assistant
and we can sort of cope [Eb] with more [G] people.
So if you fancy having a go at this, if there isn't one in your [Eb] area, [Gb] get in touch with
me at mail at chickenbonejohn [N].com.
I'm sure we can arrange something for you or if you've got an event that [Eb] you'd like
[N] to tack this event on to, that would be cool.
Also I can do a workshop [Ab] in the day and do an evening gig [Eb] so you can have a complete day's [N] entertainment.
If you're really daring, we could actually open the night with you good people who've
made [Eb] your guitars to [Ebm] [N] show off what you've learned.
Okey doke, so as I say, you don't need any previous musical experience, you don't need
any previous woodworking or craft skills, we'll go through the whole thing.
These things are really easy to play.
[Abm] The secret of the [Eb] playing is a very simple tuning, an open chord, not like an [Dbm] ordinary
guitar, more akin to a banjo.
[Eb]
We don't put frets on these, if you want to put them on later you can.
We just have the markers and a [N] plate with a slide.
You get a slide as well, if you want to be a bit more fancy, it's that handmade [G] glass
slide, I have those on [Eb] sale as well.
And we,
[Ab] [Eb]
this is an open chord, I really don't need to worry about putting my fingers down,
[Ab] I can just put [Gm] my slide on it, it's very [N] easy, you can just strum it with it, you can be
as [Eb] fancy as you can in terms of picking, or you can just strum the thing and it works.
So I'll show [N] you how to do a basic three chord song, and as I say, oops, get out of shot
there, the thing will plug in, I've got this into a tiny tiny little battery amp here,
nothing fancy.
Oh, [Eb] just a little,
[Bbm] [Gm] and
[Eb]
[Ab] [Eb]
[Bb] [Bm] There's the makings of a three [N] chord song, and I'll take you all the way through all
that stuff, a little bit of musical theory just to get you started, but nothing [Eb] difficult.
[F] Show you where to put the frets, [N]
the fretboard, the fretboard will give you a marker, and
they've got the numbers on, so I'll just shout out which number it is, like play by numbers,
it's so easy, and so is the making.
As I say, we usually do this on about half day or a little bit longer [F] for adults, for
children it's really a [G] full day course because we take the time and we need, obviously we
need a bit more [Abm] supervision on that.
But if there's [Ebm] one in your area, [N] get in touch, if you fancy this, again, get in touch and
I'll see if I can get one organised in your area, so you too can make your very own three
string guitar and learn how to play in a day.
There you go, £20, bye for now.
