Hi, I'm Jo Boyce from CJM Music and in this video
with you a few tips about how we play Bread of Life, Truth Eternal on the guitar.
Now the first thing is that the guitar inversion that we use is capo 3 G.
It's sort of a B-flat major and
a capo, I use one of these trigger capos because it's really quick and easy to get on and off and
put that on the third fret and that means that when I play a G chord, it actually sounds B-flat major.
this, it's going to be a little tricky because I'm going to be talking about

_ _ _ _ Hi, I'm Jo Boyce from CJM Music and in this video
I'm going to be sharing with you a few tips about how we play Bread of Life, Truth Eternal on the guitar. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Now the first thing is that the guitar inversion that we use is capo 3 _ G.
It's sort of a B-flat major and
_ using a capo, I use one of these trigger capos because it's really quick and easy to get on and off and _ _ _
put that on the third fret and that means that when I play a G chord, it actually sounds B-flat major.
_ _ So as I explain this, it's going to be a little tricky because I'm going to be talking about
_ G
_ major chordings _ and
then the notes of the song are in B-flat major.
So just bear with me a little bit on that and _ _
one of the other things is that this is something that I do quite instinctively.
So breaking it down is a little bit tricky, but I'm going to try my best.
_ [Bb] So
_ the first note of the melody is right here on the top string in the G major chord and
_ [Gb] _
_ _ as I play the chords, I can somehow just get my fingers to hit the right strings to get the melody.
So it would go [Bb] like this.
_ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[G] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _
_ _ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ [C] _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ So, let me see if I can break that down for you.
As I said, the first note is there _ on the first string.
So it's actually the note is B-flat and
[Eb] _ _ _ the second chord is a C and [F] then we move up to a D and
[Eb] _ _ as I move
to the chords, I can work down from the [A] B-flat
[Gm] _ _ through the A [Eb] to the G like [Bb] this. _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ [Eb] _ _ It depends on what inversion of G you're using.
You can do it like that or
if [C] you use these three fingers, you can use this, your ring [Dm] finger, to get [Gm] the A on it like that.
_ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ _ _ [Gm] Bread [Eb] of life.
And then I'm ending up on the C and sometimes I do a little hammer-on
_ _ [F] _ _ as I work up to the D major chord.
_ So,
_ _ _ _ that just fills in that little gap and then I'm back on truth eternal.
So that's on the root of that chord, truth eternal.
[Eb] _ _ [Gm] _ _
So that's all on the second string this time.
So the first phrase is all on the top string,
_ _ _ [Eb] second phrase all on the [G] second string, _ _ [D] _ _ truth eternal.
_ [F] So I do that. _ _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _
So I'm kind of going back to [Eb] my G and that becomes a sort [Gm] of sus.
_ _ _ And then the next bit is more or less the same as the first bit, broken now, back on the first string.
_ _ [Eb] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ And then to set us free, [Bb] starts _ here on your A,
_ _ [F] _ _ _
to set us.
[Eb] So I sort of do a D suspension chord [F] to get _ _ that note in. _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ And then for free, staying on the B flat but putting an E minor in.
[Eb] So it becomes a sort of like an [F] E minor seventh. _ _
_ _ And then back to D _ to [G] get the A in.
So it's free, _
again all on the top [Bb] string, _ free. _
_ _ [F] _ _ _ _ And then back to the top [Bbm] of the pattern.
_ _ [G] _ _
The risen,
these three notes here, the _ [E] risen, and I do that all around [F] the D.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Bb] And then I'm back to [Eb] C, _ _ _ open note on the first [F] string. _ _ _ _
[Bb] _ _ _ _ _ [A] _ And then I just [Gm] fall down through the bass to get to the E minor [Bb] there.
So that's the _ [A] _ F sharp [Gm] bass. _ _ _ _ _ _
Is, that's the lowest note in [Bb] the melody and that comes in on the third string.
_ [Eb] Is, and then we're going back up to the B flat.
_ _ _ [A] _ _ [Eb] _ _
Here, bread.
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _
_ _ [C] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ _
_ So I'll just do that bit again.
So it is _ [G] here, in, [Eb] _ _
bread, _ _ [F] and wine.
That's the A on the top string and then we're [Bb] finishing where we started on the B. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [C] _ _ [Bb] _
_ [Eb] So that's a sort of [Bb] G suspension. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
And I'm putting in the A as well.
It's just a little bit more interesting.
So it's not a straight sus.
_ [F] _ _ _ _
_ _ [G] So that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
It's a little bit complicated, but it's worth the time.
It's a lovely way to start the song.
We often start with an instrumental chorus and then maybe sing the verse
_ first, so that the first words that you hear are the echo of our response to the invitation to communion.
[F] Obviously a slightly different translation nowadays
[E] _ _ in terms of the revised translation of the Mass for the Catholic liturgy.
But _ still a beautiful echo nonetheless.
_ [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ [Gm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ [Fm] _ _ _
[A] _ _ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ _ _ _ _ _ [F] _
_ _ [C] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
_ _ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _
_ _ [D] _ _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
_ [Eb] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ [Cm] _
_ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ [Ab] One cup, _ one _ [G] family. _ _
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
And [Bb] _ _ _ _ _ _
[C] you know the rest [N] of course.
So have a go at that and
maybe film a video of yourself playing it if you've managed to figure it out and share it with us.
We'd love to see how you're getting on.
Take care.
God bless. _
_ [Gm] _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
