Every night after dinner, Papa fell asleep listening to the Grand Ole Opry.
He'd turn in early, going to his bedroom around nine when the program started.
Sometimes I'd go in there and lay down with him and listen to the music coming from his tiny radio.
I was allowed to stay with Papa as long as I was peaceful.
If I recognized the tune, I could sing along quietly, but that was it.
He didn't want anybody interrupting his Grand Ole Opry.
He said that listening to that music was the best part of his day.
My Papa has Alzheimer's now.
When we see each other, his eyes widen with recognition, but he has trouble saying the words.
We hug instead, and he doesn't let go for a long time.
Granny says he can't remember much about his past and has difficulty processing the present.
But he does ask about me.
And if I happen to be on TV at night, he'll sit up and watch, no matter how late.
Recently, Granny told me that Papa doesn't listen to the Grand Ole Opry at bedtime anymore.
He listens to my CDs.
Every night, she asks if he might like to hear something different, but he refuses.
Instead, he puts in my music and pushes play.
It's as if I'm still there, like I was as a child, lying beside him, singing him to sleep as the darkness falls.
When I started singing, and I'm [Eb] as a younger child, here in Raleigh and around the area,
[D] I [Abm] had the opportunity to sing in churches, [E] and my grandfather has always told [Db] me that he wants me to sing him a bluegrass song.
I've said for years [A] and years that I was never going to sing a [Eb] bluegrass song.
But it's Christmas.
[Bb] And even though you did just get up and [Em] leave to go to the [Eb] restroom, and I thought you weren't going to come back,
[E] and we had to [D] chase you down,
Papa, this [D] song is for you.
Merry Christmas.
