Cliff Richard wins Lifetime Achievement presented by Peter Jamieson | BRIT Awards 1989 chords
Start Jamming...
Anyway, now to our final award.
And we've really, really left the biggest till the end.
This award is given for a lifetime achievement in the record industry
and is the highest honour that can be presented to any artist.
And here to tell you more about it is the chairman of the BPI, Peter Jamieson.
[B]
[G] Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
[Gm] The BPI is the voice that unites Britain's recording companies
[A]
For causes such as the School for Performing Arts, which you've heard about tonight,
[G]
and events such as this.
130 members, large and small, have voted for the Brits nominees
and the winners that you have applauded.
[C#] But this next award for a lifetime's achievement is not voted for.
It is the highest honour we can confer, and it is by universal acclaim.
[G] Tonight's recipient will join Paul McCartney, Pete Towns and others
whose longevity of success sets them apart.
Our winner this year toured the world
and is [G#] completing his 30th anniversary of recording success.
Just to emphasise his [G] claim, as if we [F] hadn't noticed,
he achieved simultaneously the number one single and the number one album in the charts [G#m] last Christmas.
This is an extraordinary achievement for an artist at any stage of his career.
To help me honour this legend in his 30th year of recording and touring,
can I ask Mick Fleetwood, who's done a wonderful job for us tonight, to join me on centre stage.
[N]
[D] Now, the winner of this award is a very, very special person to me.
All those many years ago, it was this man, shadowed by four fellow musicians,
who, believe it or not, inspired me to play drums.
So it is with great pride that I ask you all to stand up and applaud and salute Cliff Richard.
[G] [C]
[F]
[G] [C]
[F]
[C] Not yet, Cliff.
Not yet.
Cliff, this is your life.
[G]
[E]
Come on, pretty baby, let's move it and groove it.
Cliff's achievements are staggering.
99 hit singles spanning four decades.
We're all [F#m] going on [B] a summer [E] holiday.
More [F#m] work in four a [B] week or two.
[A]
Including a UK record of [B] 11 number one and nine number twos, [E] plus 27 top ten [A] albums.
[C] His [G] [C] recent 47-date UK tour [F] sold out within three days of the tickets going on [C] sale.
[G]
[F#m] [G]
[D]
[A] And with Mistletoe Wine, he had this year's top selling single.
[E] [Bm]
[E] Cliff's achievement in the business is amazing and defies every superlative.
[A] [B]
Can I go now?
[N]
The bear over here won it.
Thank you very much.
Listen, it really has been the most wonderful 30 [G] years.
I have had the greatest time of my life.
I have enjoyed this industry and have gained a lot from it.
In recent [F] years, it's really thrilled me that our industry has managed to give things back via band aid, live aid, etc.,
sport aid.
And therefore, I must say that I'm kind of proud to be part of our industry.
And tonight, you know, teaches us a [G] number of things.
One thing's for certain.
The audience isn't just you.
[A]
But it's you [Em] and you [D] and you at the top.
And tonight,
[D#] because [E] our industry appeals [G] to a diverse [D] audience, all ages, all types.
And tonight, you saw a diverse group of musicians.
Singers singing in various styles, performing in different styles, playing music in different styles.
And I'm really grateful to have been [A] part, just [F#] a little tiny part of a great [G] industry.
And tonight is a night for cheering success.
Everybody on this stage has been [N] successful.
And so therefore, I feel compelled to say this at the end of my little thank you speech.
And I am grateful for this.
I feel compelled to say that we are supported in our industry from many people outside it.
And we have people sitting here tonight who are not part of the music industry.
And so therefore, when I hear Kenneth Baker booed, I'd like to say I'm really sorry about [G] that.
But thank you for coming.
And I hope you [N] come back next year.
The rest of us have just got to grow [Gm] up.
Thank you.
