[Eb] Hello [Ab] and welcome back to this Funstrums lesson.
Today we're going to learn how to play Close to You by [E] Maxi Priest.
[Ab] Great classic and really fun to play [Gb] as always and that's why we're going to include this
as part of our lesson series.
So let's dive right into it and let's check this out and see how we can actually learn
[Ab] to play the chords.
It's very simple, there are only three chords to [Eb] it.
It starts kind of at this feel.
[Gb]
[Db] And the reason why I bring up the [Abm] bass line is that it helps us find the key which is
[Ebm] E minor.
So pretty [Am] much through the first verse he doesn't have [A] any chords, it's [G] just him singing
and [E] the bass line.
So once he hits [Db] the chorus where he [F] goes
[Eb] That starts out simply with an E minor 7 chord.
[F] [Ebm]
[A] All that is just E minor 7.
And [Gb] you can play an E minor 7 simply [Ebm] by
It's [Em] the same as an A minor 7 except it's barred on [Bbm] the 6th fret.
So you have your 3rd finger right here on the 8th fret of the 4th string and your 2nd
finger right here on [E] the 7th fret of the 2nd string and [Bbm] the entire bar across the 6th fret. Okay?
[F] So
[Ebm] [Eb] And then right [Abm] there that's an A minor 7 chord.
Okay?
Very simple, you simply bar your finger right across the 4th [E] fret and then putting your
3rd finger right here at the 6th fret of [Abm] the 5th string.
Okay?
Like that.
So you [C] have
[Bbm] [Abm] Or like this.
You know, I'm simply skipping the 5th string when I play it like this but you can also
play it like that.
And [A] then you [F] have
[D] You know, and all that is
[Bbm]
And that's just a B flat minor 7, okay?
[Db] And then you get back to an E minor [A] 7.
So let's take it from the top.
[F] [Eb]
[B] [Db] [Bbm]
[Ebm] [Gb] Okay?
So that's kind of the strumming pattern you could use depending on the style you're playing it in.
[Ab] You know, if I heard the recording I would play more in that style.
[Gb]
[Abm] [Bbm]
[Ebm] So it's [Gb] essentially like minor blues, you know, in E flat.
That's exactly what it is actually.
[Ebm] Kind of a one minor
Not a blues but a one minor 1-4-5.
[F] [Gbm]
[Abm] [Bb] [Bbm]
[Eb] [Ebm] [B] [Db] Right?
And then it goes into [E] the verse.
And at the verse it simply goes like this.
[C] It's an E flat minor 7 [Bbm] to B flat minor 7 [Abm] to an A flat minor [Ab] 7.
[E] And it also has the G flat on the [Ab] top.
And then back to [Bbm] B flat minor 7.
Okay?
[E] [A] So [Ab] this third chord which I played is simply [Abm] your A flat minor 7 which is barred.
Okay?
And then you want to [Gb] put your pinky in right here at the 7th fret of [Abm] the 2nd string.
So you end up with that.
So a strum [G] pattern could be like this.
[Ebm] [Bbm] [Abm]
[Bb] [Bbm] [Abm] Then it goes back to the A flat minor 7 again.
[Bbm]
[Ebm] And then back to E flat minor 7.
[Gb]
[Bbm] [Abm] [Ab]
And then this is the last [Bb] chord that comes in.
You know, before he [G] goes back into the [F] chorus.
[Bbm]
[Ebm] [Bb] So this last [Bb] chord is a B flat 7 sharp [Em] 5.
You can play it simply by [Bb]
[D] having your pinky
[Bb]
[D] Right.
Your pinky on the 7th fret of the 2nd string.
Your 3rd finger on the [A] 7th fret of the 3rd [Abm] string.
Your 2nd finger on the 6th fret of the 4th string.
And 1st finger on the 6th fret of the 6th string.
And skip the 5th [Bb] string.
Okay?
So only
[B] And don't strum the 1st [Bb] string either.
Okay?
It should be pretty easy to mute the 5th and 1st strings with your fingers.
[Ab] And then you go back into [Em] the main chorus.
[F] So again for the verse, the pattern is like this.
E flat minor [Ebm] 7.
B [Bbm] flat minor 7.
[Abm] A flat minor 7.
With this different variation.
Fingering variation.
[Bbm] Back to B flat minor 7.
Then back [Abm] down again.
To A flat minor [Bbm] 7.
B flat minor 7.
Back to E flat minor 7.
B flat minor 7.
[Abm] A flat minor 7.
[Bb] And then B flat 7 sharp [Em] 5.
Okay?
[Abm] And then again the [Ebm] chorus is
E flat minor [Abm] 7.
A flat minor [Bbm] 7.
B flat minor [Ebm] 7.
Back to E flat minor 7.
[Am] So I hope you found this lesson helpful.

And [Gb] you can play an E minor 7 simply [Ebm] by_

finger right here on [E] the 7th fret of the 2nd string and [Bbm] the entire bar across the 6th fret. Okay?
_ [F] So_
[Ebm] _ _ _ _ [Eb] And then right [Abm] there that's an A minor 7 chord.
Okay?
Very simple, you simply bar _ your finger right across the 4th [E] fret and then putting your
3rd finger right here at the 6th fret of [Abm] the 5th string.
_ Okay?
Like that.
So you [C] have_
_ _ [Bbm] _ _ [Abm] _ Or like this.
You know, I'm simply skipping the 5th string when I play it like this but you can also
play it like that.
And [A] then you [F] have_ _
_ [D] You know, and all that is_
[Bbm] _ _
_ _ And that's just a B flat minor 7, okay?
[Db] And then _ _ _ _ you get back to an E minor [A] 7.
So let's take it from the top.
[F] _ [Eb] _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ _ [Db] _ _ [Bbm] _ _
[Ebm] _ _ _ _ [Gb] Okay?
So that's kind of the strumming pattern you could use _ depending on the style you're playing it in. _
[Ab] You know, if I heard the recording I would play more in that style.
_ [Gb] _
_ [Abm] _ _ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ _
_ [Ebm] So it's [Gb] essentially like minor blues, you know, in E flat.
That's exactly what it is actually.
[Ebm] Kind of a one minor_
Not a blues but a one minor 1-4-5.
_ _ _ [F] _ _ _ _ [Gbm] _
[Abm] _ _ _ [Bb] _ _ [Bbm] _ _ _
[Eb] _ _ _ _ [Ebm] _ [B] _ [Db] Right?
And then _ _ _ _ it goes into [E] the verse.
And at the verse it simply goes like this.
[C] It's an E flat minor 7 [Bbm] to B flat minor 7 [Abm] to an A flat minor [Ab] 7.
_ [E] And it also has _ the G flat on the [Ab] top.
_ And then back to [Bbm] B flat minor 7.
Okay?
[E] _ [A] So [Ab] this third chord which I played is simply [Abm] your A flat minor 7 which is barred.
Okay?
And then you want to [Gb] put your pinky in right here at the 7th fret of [Abm] the 2nd string.
So you end up with that.
So a strum [G] pattern could be like this.
[Ebm] _ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ _ _ [Abm] _
_ _ [Bb] _ _ [Bbm] _ [Abm] Then it goes back to the A flat minor 7 again.
_ _ [Bbm] _ _ _ _
[Ebm] _ And then back to E flat minor 7.
[Gb] _ _ _
[Bbm] _ _ _ _ [Abm] _ _ _ [Ab] _
And then this is the last [Bb] chord that comes in. _
You know, before he [G] goes back into the [F] chorus.
_ _ [Bbm] _
[Ebm] _ _ [Bb] _ _ _ So this last [Bb] chord is a B flat 7 sharp [Em] 5.
You can play it simply by [Bb] _
[D] having your pinky_
_ [Bb] _ _
Okay?
So only_
[B] And don't strum the 1st [Bb] string either. _
_ With this different variation.
Okay?
[Abm] And then again the [Ebm] chorus is_
E flat minor [Abm] 7.
A flat minor [Bbm] 7.
B flat minor [Ebm] 7.
Back to E flat minor 7.
