CNN Music: 'The Lumineers' band crashes with fans on tour chords
Start Jamming...
When we were younger we thought everyone was on our side
Then we grew a little and [A] romanticized the time I saw
Flowers in your hair
[E] We'd been making music together, me and Wes, for about 5 or 6 years.
We grew up in New Jersey actually.
I was friends with Jer's older brother.
I was friends with his younger brother.
The friendship and what we have now [G] kind of followed that.
And now we've demonstrated it to the [A] cops
And all the things we said
We were self-assured
We started off playing in New York for about 3 years
so we got really used to the scene
and we saw the same 10 or 15 people at every show.
We ended up working [Ab] 3 jobs just to live there.
I kind of reached the [E] conclusion that if we were going to do it anywhere
it wasn't working in New York.
Yeah, we wanted to move somewhere and shack up
and write a bunch of new material and just work on art
and stop worrying about rent.
So it made a lot of sense [G] to move somewhere cheaper.
And then Denver was a random spot on the map
that we had never really been to
and it worked out better than we could have imagined.
So now I sit here, I love the back
And I hope it's not just so attractive
[C] The way you move, I won't [G] close my eyes
We placed an ad on [E] Craigslist
and Neela had just chopped off all your hair
and just graduated [G] and was at this sort of fork in the road.
I remember specifically asking what kind of music they were listening to
and they just listed off, [Em] you know, like, I don't know, [D] Villain and The Beatles
and it was refreshing to not have somebody list off a bunch of pretentious
like, [Bm] these are bands you've never heard of, guarantee it, kind of [A] thing.
So it was very natural and organic and continues to be [C] that way.
[F] [C] Yeah, our first tour was about 30 days
and we didn't stay at a single hotel.
We didn't know anyone.
A lot of times we didn't even have a place to stay that night
and we'd meet someone at the show and say,
hey, do you have a place to stay?
And then we'd get [Am] there and say, hey, do you want something to eat?
And that was incredible.
We did [C] not expect that.
One of the best tricks, I think, was going out into the audience
and sometimes it wasn't even about, let's try to blow this audience away
or do something different.
It was kind of like, we've got to stay somewhere tonight.
Let's go out in the audience [Em] and play Ho Hey
and try to, so then we could talk to them and be like, you know.
That would really take down the barrier, though,
between the audience and the performer.
We feel very [C] blessed and lucky
of all the people who opened up their arms and homes [Am] to us.
[C]
[C]
[D] We [C] were in a Ford Windstar for every tour until this one,
and [G] so this is very [D] luxurious.
We got a 15-passenger van [E] and somehow it's filled up.
[Ab] You buy a bigger house, you buy more stuff.
But it's definitely a step in the [C] right direction.
We have a lot of love in our hearts for that Windstar, though.
[F] [C]
