Hello guys, this is Amos of Old Music,
and in today's lesson, I'm going to teach you
how to play Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay.
[Ab] I'll be teaching you how to play the instrumental
that repeats throughout the song,
so you can play and, well, it's like,
essentially sing the whole song to yourself.
So here we go.
Pretty awesome stuff.
Goes like this, give you a preview.
Check that.
[Ebm] _ _ _ _ [B] _ _
_ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ [Bbm] _ _
_ [Ebm] _ _ _ _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ _ [Bbm] _
_ _ Yeah, obviously you can like add [Ebm] improvisations,
be like_
_ _ [B] _ _ _ [Gb] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Ebm] _ _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ [Gb] _ _
_ _ [Bbm] _ _ _ _ _ [Ebm] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[Ab] Alright, anyway, let's get right into it.
So let's do a melody and chords,
and then you can kind of like improvise on it yourself.
So here we go.
We'll break it up into _ pa_
Two parts, okay?
So yeah, two parts, [Gb] so it's easier to learn.
First part goes like this.
Right hand starts on the [Ab] G flat here.
Middle C is here for reference, so G flat here.
So three G [Gbm] flats,
_ two A [Em] flats,
and then three B [Bb] flats,
_ and then another B flat, another B flat.
[A] And that's it for the first part for the right hand.
One more [Db] time.
It goes three G flats,
[Abm] two A flats,
and then five B [Bb] flats.
One, two, three, four, five.
That's it for [Ab] the right hand.
Left hand, three chords here.
The three [B] chords are E flat [Ebm] minor, which is
E flat, G flat, B flat.
It's a fully blackboard chord.
Second chord is D flat major,
which is D flat, F, A flat.
Third chord is B [B] major, which is
B, D sharp, F sharp.
So these three chords in mind.
[Ebm] So E flat minor,
[Db] D flat major, [B] and B major.
The turns together goes like this.
[Ab] So, okay.
So G flat and E flat [Ebm] minor together.
_ A flat and D flat [Db] major together.
B flat and B [B] major together. _ _
_ And that's it for the first part.
One more [Ebm] time.
It goes together, _ together, [B] together. _ _ _
Like that.
So we're doing the melody and block chords first.
At the end I'll tell you how to [Ab] kind of like
put it all [E] together.
But anyways, the second part right hand continues.
It goes four [Bb] B flats,
one, two, three, [Abm] four,
A flat and then [Fm] four Fs.
One, two, three, four, [Gb] G flat.
That's it for the second [E] part for the right hand.
One more time.
It goes four B [Bb] flats,
one, two, three, four,
[Ab] E flat and then four Fs.
[F] One, two, three, four, and [Bm] then G flat.
That's it for the right hand.
Left hand, two [Em] chords here.
The two chords are [Gb] G flat major.
This is a fully black note chord.
G flat, B flat, E flat.
And second chord, B [Bbm] flat minor,
which is B flat, B flat, F.
So with these two [Gb] chords in mind,
G flat major [Bbm] and B flat minor.
The turn together goes like this.
[E] B flat and G flat major [Gb] together. _ _ _
[Ab] F and B flat [Bbm] minor together.
_ _ _ [Gb] _
Like that.
One more time.
It goes together, _ _ _ [Bbm] together.
_ _ [Gb] _ That's it.
So back to back, the two parts [D] we've learned this lesson
would be played like [Ebm] this.
_ _ _ [B] _ _
_ _ [Gb] _ _ _ _ _ [Bbm] _
_ _ _ [Ebm] _ _ _ [Db] _ _
[B] _ _ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ _
[Bbm] _ _ _ [Gb] Yeah, so once you get [E] the melody and chords all good,
you can start to [Db] do what I did in the preview
[Ab] where you actually just play left hand chords
for every right hand note.
[Ebm] So it's like_
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ [Gb] _ _
_ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ _ [Ebm] _ _
_ _ [B] _ _ _ _ [Gb] _ _
_ _ _ [Bbm] _ _ _ [Gb] Yeah, and then anything [Abm] for that
is when you have to instantly change to another chord,
that'll be difficult.
You might be hitting [B] the wrong notes.
So practice those jumps.
[B] For example, B major [Gb] to G major.
So just practice that jump.
Like that.
It's easy to hit the wrong note.
And then the same for the last two chords as well. _
_ _ Like that.
And [Bbm] practice those jumps again.
Anyways, [Ab] yeah, that's that.
And if you want to add more improvisations afterwards,
you can.
Left hand can do like [Eb] octave and arpeggio patterns.
_ _ [B] _
_ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ And then [Dbm] the right hand can [Ab] harmonize it as well.
So [Ebm] you can be like_
_ [B] _
_ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ _ [Bbm] _
_ _ [Ebm] _ _ _ _ _ [B] _
_ _ _ [Gb] _ _ _ [Bbm] _ _
_ _ [Ebm] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [Eb] _ _
_ [N] Yeah, play around with it.
But anyways, that's that.
