[G#m] I came [C#m] to Nashville on the [C] progressive delay.
I was becoming single on the [G] Ernst Tub, Midnight Tambourine on [Em] March 28, 1964.
And I was so excited.
It was my very first [N] plane ride.
It was pretty bumpy, and we got on the plane, and it just really was a bad day.
When we got off the door, [C] they said, well, I'm so sorry [E] your first ride had to be so bad [N] and bumpy.
I thought it was always like that.
But I got here, and I was staying at the Sam [E] Davis Hotel, the old hotel downtown here.
[Bm] And Bill Ogden said, if you're ready, I'll pick [Am] you up and take you to the Grand Ole [B] Opry.
I always said, since I was five [Bm] years old, someday I'm going to sing at the [G] Grand Ole Opry.
And he said, I'll take you to the Opry, so you can see [B] Miss Kitty Wills on this day or that night.
And so I was all excited, and I actually got ready [G] early, which was different for me.
[N] And I was down at the, out front of the hotel, kind of leaning against the wall, waiting for him to pick me up.
And I saw this fancy convertible come pull up real fast, and this guy got out, [G] and he [E] ran into the barber shop.
I was kind of watching, because [C#] he was pretty nice looking.
And I [B] just was watching the gold zone.
And while he was in the barber shop, something, a policeman came by and started writing a ticket, because he didn't pay [D] anybody to be [B] there.
[E] And while he was writing that ticket, the guy come running out, and so I started [B] talking to him.
He's one of these charmers.
He just started talking to him, and the [E] first thing you know, that policeman [G] tore up that ticket.
[G#] And I had no [Bm] idea that he even noticed that [B] I was there.
But when the [E] policeman walked away, and the guy got in his car, he shut the door, turned [B] on the TV, and turned on, looked at me, and winked and drove [Em] off.
