Hi guys, I wanted to share with [N] you a Professor Longhair trick which I picked up a while ago
and we've done a few Professor [F] Longhair [Ab]
videos on this channel if [N] you go back and check on the video
we did on how to play Big Chief and one or two things, how to play Tipitina was another tutorial
I want to share this kind of Professor [B] Longhair lick trick if you like which I picked up from him
from his version of Tipitina and I think it's a very simple lick but it's very effective
and it's simply, I'll play it first and then you can come in so it's one [F] [B]
[F] [Bb]
of the Professor's little
trademark things and I want you to [N] learn how to do it because it's a good exercise in itself
so camera person if you just come around to the right hand and I'll show you how it goes now
[F] So Tipitina is in F and this is the trick here so [A] it's I play, I don't know if you can get that in camera person?
Yes.
You're a bit quiet today okay so [C] [F]
[C] [A] it's you play octaves in left hand and then go
[Bb] [B]
[F] I'll do it again you need to get in both hands so [C] [A] it's
[Bb] [B] [C] that's the essence of the trick and it does
it [Ab] descending as well so [Gb]
[F] it's so
[C] that's the essence of it [A] there and [Bb]
[F]
then descending
and [Bb]
[Fm]
[C] [F] what you can do with this [B] lick [Em] is you can actually make an [C] exercise out of it
for example when you're warming up in the morning you could take Professor Longhair's little
[F] and you could do [C] this for example in the key of C you can make it a chromatic thing
[F]
[Db]
you don't have to do it that fast but the [C] essence of the lick is you play in the octave right so
you play the octave in the left hand and then you go
[Db] [D]
[Eb] I [E] [D]
[C]
mean that sounds quite cool in itself and [E]
[F] go and listen to Professor Longhair's version [Fm] of
Tipitina particularly where he's just playing solo piano and you'll see if you can spot where
he puts that licking [F] it's
[G] [Bbm]
[Bb] just one of these little tricks but I've kind of taken that and turned it
into a kind of
and [A]
it's [C] a great that's a great exercise a fairly [Ab] advanced exercise for those of you [G] who have
problems playing [Gb] hands together remember one of the perennial questions I get from many of my
subscribers is you know when I put hands together I lose my coordination well doing an exercise like
that every day like [G] this [Db] do that your left [Dbm] hand and your right hand really [N] have to work in harmony
with each other and even if you can do it [C] slowly you know [Db] [D]
[E] you don't have to do it the kind of speed
that I do it slow it right down and [F] [E] do that for five minutes a day as part of your kind [G] of boogie
woogie hand warming up exercise and you'll soon find that you will be a maestro so as always this
is Dr K with a little [Eb] Professor Longhair's secret give me your questions your comments if you've
enjoyed this video please share it that's a great favor you can do for me [N] these videos of course are
free and I love sharing all this stuff with you but if you could share this video press the like
button and subscribe that's that you you will be helping me out to spread the boogie word so this
is Dr K with a little bit of Professor Professor Longhair and I will talk to you soon
