Country Blues Guitar Lesson - Down The Dirt Road Blues Breakdown - Paul Rishell chords
Start Jamming...
Alright, we're going to do Down the Dirt Road Blues now by Charlie Patton.
Capo it up one fret, playing in C position.
We're going to start by just basically playing one note as we sing the melody, and we're
going to go up here.
And I'm just playing the one [D#] note, this is like a C sharp.
And just play [C#m] it with your index finger of your right hand.
So [G#m]
[C#] that's the [D#m] 9th fret, [G#m]
to the 7th fret, to the 3rd fret.
And you'll be singing with that.
[D#] Now comes the first riff, and you're at the 3rd fret E, and you're going to do this riff.
Play the B at the 5th fret, back to the E at the 3rd, [C#] to the G at the 6th.
[G#] To the open G.
[F#] Now the D string, 3rd [C#] fret.
Make a C chord, just play the first two strings of a C chord.
You're actually going to play, you're going to pull the open G against the C sharp.
The G sharp against the C sharp here.
[D#] [F#]
[C#] And then thumb comes back on that root.
And then just sort of hit that root and strum.
So it's going to sound like this.
You start out the song with a chord.
Get your time together.
[A#m] Play that string with the [C#] nail in your first or second finger, and come back on it.
So you're playing it on the downstroke and an upstroke.
[G#m]
Now you're ready to do the first [Dm] riff.
And use your [D#] fingers on the B and the E string.
[C#] Then use your thumb on the G.
[G#] Get the D with your thumb, [C#] and all the bass strings with your thumb.
Later on you're going to bring your thumb up to the B string when we do the riff at the end.
Okay, [D#m] so the first part of the verse, we're just playing a single note [D#] as we sing.
Here's the riff.
[C#] Now we're going to go to the 4 chord.
Keep your C [F#] position and move it up.
So now you're at the 4 chord here, and you've got a C chord, [G#] the G is open, and you've got
the E [G] string on the [F#] 9th fret.
And you're going to just strum that as [C#]
you sing the second part of the verse.
[F#] I'm going away, to a world unknown.
[C#m] Riff again.
[C#] Same riff, just the first time.
And that picking and strumming.
And now you go to a G.
[G#] I'm worried.
[G#] Now, G to a G7.
So I'm worried.
[G] Go to a half step from the G flat to [G#] the G7.
Stop and sing.
I won't be [E] worried long.
Now you're going to finish off the song with the reason why we want to do this song.
It's a great riff at the end that he came up with.
And it works like this.
You're going to be using the B string to start the riff at the 5th fret.
Play it with your thumb of your right hand.
[F] Use your second or [G] first finger to play the open E right after.
[C#] Now move to the [Em] 2nd fret from the capo.
[C#] And [G] then add the G string 2nd fret.
So [D#] that's B string 4th fret to the open E.
[C#] To the B string 1st fret.
[A#] To the G string [D#] 2nd fret.
Now you're playing the B [A#m]
and the G with your thumb.
[C#] [A#m]
Now you're in position.
Take your second finger off and do your [C#] right hand.
Open E, the B at the 1st fret and the G open.
And the same thing again.
And add the root.
3rd fret, A string.
So it's going to go like [A#m] this.
[C#]
So from the G.
[G#]
[G#m]
[C#m] [C#]
[F#] [C#m]
[C#]
[G#] I'm worried now, but I won't be [C#] worried long.
And he ends the song with [D#] just these 3 little notes.
[D#m] [C#]
