Country Blues Guitar Lessons - Dirt Road Blues - Paul Rishell - Down the Dirt 2 chords
Start Jamming...
Alright, we're going to do Down the Dirt Road Blues now by Charlie Patton.
Capo it up one fret, playing in C position.
We're going to start by just basically playing one note as we sing the melody, and we're
going to go up here.
[C#m]
And I'm just playing the one [F#m] note, just like a C sharp.
[D#] And just play it with your [C#m] index finger of your right [F#] hand.
So [G#m] [C#] that's the [D#m] ninth fret, [G#m]
to the seventh fret, to the third fret.
[D#] And you'll be singing with that.
[G#m] [E] Now comes the first riff, and [D#] you're at the third fret E, and you're going to do this riff.
Play the B at the fifth fret, back to the E at the third, [C#]
to the G at the [D#] sixth.
[C#]
[G#] To the open G.
[F#]
Now the D string, third fret.
[C#] Make a C chord.
Just play the first two strings of a C chord.
You're actually going to play, you're going to pull the open G against the C sharp, or
the G sharp against the C sharp here.
[D#] So it's,
[C#] [F#] [C#] and then thumb comes back on that root, [G#] and then [C#] just sort of hit that root and strum.
So it's going to sound like this.
You start out the song with a chord.
Get your time together.
Play [A#m] that string with the nail on your first or second finger, and come back on it.
So you're playing it in the downstroke and an upstroke.
[G#m]
Now you're ready to [C#] do the first riff.
And use your [D#] fingers on the B and the E string.
[C#] Then use your [C#m] thumb on the G.
[F#] [C#] Get the [F#] D with your thumb, [C#] and all the bass strings with your thumb.
[G#] Later on you're [D] going to bring your thumb up to the B string when we do the riff at the end.
Okay, so [C#] the first part of the verse, we're just playing a single note [F#] as we [D#] sing.
Here's the riff.
[A#] [C#]
Now we're going to go to the four chord.
Keep your C position [F#] and move it up.
So you get, now you're at the four chord here, and you got a C chord, [D#] the G is open, and
you got the E string [G] [F#] on the ninth fret.
And you're going to just strum that as [E]
[C#] you sing the second part of the verse.
I'm [F#] going away, to [E] an unknown [C#m]
riff again.
[F#] Same [C#] riff, as we should the first time.
And that picking and strumming.
And now you go to a G.
[G] [G#] I'm worried.
Now, G to a G7.
So I'm worried.
You [G] go to a half step [D#] from the G flat to the [G#] G, G to 7.
Stop and sing.
I won't [E] be worried long.
Now you're going to finish off the song with the reason why we want to do this song.
It's a great riff at the end that he came up with.
And it works like this.
You're going to be using the B string to start the riff at the fifth fret.
Play it with your thumb of your right hand.
[D] Use your second or first finger to play the open E [E] right after that.
[C#]
Now move to the [Em] second fret, first fret from the capo, [C#]
and then add [G] the G string, second fret.
[D#] So that's B string, fourth fret to the open E, [C#] to the B string, first fret, [E] [C#] [A#]
to the G string,
second [D#] fret.
[F] Now you're playing the B [A#m] and the G with your [D#] thumb.
[C#] [A#m]
Now you're in position.
Take your [C#] second finger off and do your right hand.
Open E, the B at the first fret, and the G open.
And the same thing again.
And add the root.
Third fret, E, A string.
So it's going to go [D#] like this.
[A#m]
[C#] [G#]
[C#] So from the G.
[G#]
[A#m] [C#]
[B] [D#]
[C#]
[F#]
[E] [C#m]
[F#] [C#]
[G#]
[E] [C#]
[A#m] [C#]
And he ends the song [D] with just these three little [D#] notes.
[F#] [G#] [C#]
