Okay, who starts?
[Bb] I think Peter does.
Oh yeah.
Okay.
Thank you for welcoming me.
Here are a few questions for Dan Hicks by Matthew Ritter and London Robinson.
We are interviewing you because we're a science project about local history.
Our teachers suggest that we look at life of a local musician who has had a long and
successful career, and we chose you.
[D] Oh, thank you very much.
I'm glad to be here today with you guys.
What's your name?
I'm Dan Hicks.
I have a band called Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks.
I heard you have plenty of [Bb] other bands too.
Your turn, Matthew.
Where are you from?
[Bb] Well, I'm from up [E] there in Santa Rosa, California, about an hour from here, up Highway 101.
But [Ab] I live in Mill Valley [Bb] now.
What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Well, it's hard to say.
The first thing I can [D] remember, I wanted to be [Bb] maybe a clown.
There were some [G] clowns that lived near me.
[Gb] Funny thing.
They were [D] older guys that went off and did, they put on their clown outfits and stuff
and they went and did shows.
And [Bb] also a [B] sound effects guy for radio.
They used to have radio shows and with making noise, bang, bang, and a guy would make sound effects.
That's one of the early things I wanted to be.
But eventually I got interested [Gb] in music and things [D] like that.
How long have you been writing songs?
Well, I think I wrote my first song around, [N] well really, I mean almost 50 years ago.
So it's been, back in the 60s, the 1960s I [D] started writing songs.
Not much, [N] not long after I started playing guitar.
How old are you?
Well, you know, since I started writing songs 50 years ago, that was when [B] I started.
That was me.
I was about 19 [Bb] or 20.
So I'm 69 now.
Though [Eb] I don't look it.
[N] How did you get famous?
Well, you know, here's how.
So my band and me, we were [Gb] performing a lot.
And we made [D] records and we performed.
And, you know, the [Gb] fame kind of goes with that.
You go out and [N] be in public and your name's in the paper and you're going to be performing somewhere.
And you just keep doing it, keep doing it, and do it on a wider scale, bigger, [D] more people know about you.
[E] And I was on television a few [G] times.
[D] Like I say, made records and got on the radio and did a lot [Gb] of shows.
So that adds [Eb] up and people start knowing [G] about you and [Dm] you get what you call your fans.
Did living in San Francisco Bay Area and Marin help you in your music career?
Good question.
[Gb] I've been asked that question by older people than you.
[G] And it's [D] still a good question.
Yes, because it's just a nice place to live [G] and there's nice people.
And [D] it's kind of an easy, safe place to be.
And it's also very creative [Gb] and there's a lot of people being creative in the area.
Lots of musicians [Bb] and actors and all kinds of people.
[N] So it's a good area to be from and it's also peaceful.
You need [Ab] that to create and to be [Bb] musical.
How many records and CDs have you made?
I don't know.
[N] Maybe 10 or maybe a little more than that.
I really don't have an exact count.
I've been on quite a few [E] records and I've made at least [D]
10 or maybe more of my own.
But quite a few really.
I mean, probably 25 or so.
[Bb] What is it selling you?
[B]
You [F] know, [E] I don't know.
It's hard because I've written [D] quite a few.
Maybe, I don't [Bb] know, 150, [G] something like that.
[D] And to pick [Bb] one out of there, I [D] can't really quite say.
I think my most popular one is a tune called I Scare Myself.
And I play that all the time.
It's kind of a [Bb] nice song.
I heard that [Bb] one in one of your concerts.
My daddy put me to it.
It was really good.
Oh, thanks.
What instruments do you play?
Well, [E] I started out playing in grade school on the drums.
[B] They had a little musical
[Gb] department.
[Bb]
And so different schools I was in, in grade school, [D] I played the drums.
And then [N] through school, high school, junior high, all that, college even, I played the drums.
[Bb]
But then I started playing guitar when I was [N] about 20 years old.
And more or less, [D] you know, out on my own.
I lived in San Francisco and started playing folk songs on the guitar.
I mainly play the guitar now.
Rhythm guitar.
Goodbye,
[Bb] I think Peter does.
Oh yeah.
