I first met Chris Stapleton at an In the Round performance at a music festival, like a learning festival that ASCAP did.
And [G] Chris sang before me in the In the Round, which [Dm] is awesome and super not fun at the same time.
[Em]
Because while he's singing, you're swept away in his amazing musicality and his voice.
And then when he's done singing, you have to sing after his amazing musicality and voice.
But I was very inspired by his songs at that time.
And then a couple years later, we got a chance to get together because I had been asked to write with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
And I asked Chris, do you want to come meet me in New Orleans and write a song with me and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band?
And he said, yes, that sounds great, Dan.
I'd love to do that.
But I do have to be honest.
I don't know the first thing about jazz.
And I said, that's I admire your [Cm] honesty.
Let's do it.
So we did.
And [F] of course, Chris was like brilliant.
And and we the band are the hosts with the most.
And we ended up having a really great time.
And a few years later, Chris was [G] in L.A. here visiting my house.
And we set out to write a song.
And he turned the tables on me for a person habitually in co-writing.
I often would say, like, what's up with you?
What's up with your life?
What's happening?
What's really bumming you out?
What's like what's the hot news in the world of you?
Chris said, I'd like to write a song about you moving your family from Minneapolis to L.A. a couple years ago.
And I said, wow, OK, that sounds like a great thing to write a song about.
And he said, I already have an idea for the title.
It's called one of those L.A. nights when the stars come out.
I said, that's such a cool title.
I love that.
But I do have to tell you that in L.A.,. the smog is so bad [E] that you rarely see the stars at night. [Eb] And he said kind of gently, Dan, it's a metaphor. [Gm] So you live and learn. [G] So that's that's this next [E] one. It was called for a while. One of those L.A. nights when the stars come out. But then when I saw it on his album, Traveller, it just had gotten a shortened title. So it was called When the Stars Come Out. So I'm going to tell you it's called When the Stars Come Out. [G] Three. [D] [C]
[G]
I was looking for a change of [F] scene. You were looking at a magazine. [C] It was red carpets and [G] limousines and the grass seemed so much greener. All we wanted was to get there [F] fast. So we packed up everything we [C] had running on hope and a tank of [G] gas like dreams were just for dreamers. [Am] We couldn't wait [Em] to [E] leave that life [C] behind. Try to find salvation in the city limits. I'm one [G] of those L.A. nights [D] when the stars come out, [C] when the stars come out [G] and they shine and they burn so bright. They [D] drown the downtown lights [C] when the stars come out, [G] when the stars come out. Everybody, somebody, [F] someday, everybody's got a part to [C] play. Everybody's trying to find a [G] way to say what needs saying. Everybody's got a friend of [F] a friend, somebody who can get you [C] in. Begging angels for a [G] sin in a game we're all playing. [Am] You and I were gamblers [E] holding cards that we can't see. [C] I'm betting on you and you're betting on me. [G] I'm one of those L.A. nights [D] when the stars come out, [C] when the stars come out [G] and they shine and they burn so bright. They [D] drown the downtown lights [C] when the stars come out, [G] when the stars come out. Okay, Chris. [D] [C]
[G]
[F] [C]
[G] [Am]
Down on the freeway, [D] the sun is out of sight. [C] And I got a feeling tonight might be the night. Tonight might be the night, [G] one of those L.A. nights [D] when the stars come out, [C] when the stars come out [G] and they shine. And they burn so bright, they [D] drown the downtown lights [C] when the stars come out, [G] when the stars come out. [C] [G] [D]
