Hi there, Steve Hackett here.
I'm going to play you my favourite Genesis track from my
favourite Genesis [C#m] album.
Part of it anyway.
[G#m] [A]
[B] I'm sure lots of you recognise this.
[E] Dancing with the Moonlit Night.
[E]
[C#] [B] For me, it [C#m] reigns supreme [B] of all Genesis songs because it goes from so [A] many [B] different styles.
[C#] Starts off with Scottish [G#m] plain song at the front, Can You Tell Me Where My Country Lies?
And then it's into that Elgarian thing, Citizens of Hope and Glory.
Land of Hope and Glory
addressing all the Brits and the idea of [C#m] corporations taking over.
[A] And [C#m] I think it's a lovely tune [C#m] but it grows into so [G#m] much more by the time it gets [C#m] to the
instrumental.
It doesn't just waffle off into that.
It goes into something that I think has got
aspects of, you hear the voices here in the background, overhanging.
[B] Something that's
[E]
[G#] Those [F#] Mellotron voices have got a [C#] hint of a Mozart [D#m] Requiem and [A#] then you get into
[B] this very angular riff [Bm] played on [B] Mellotron [F#m] cellos and distorted [E] piano.
[F#] I think it's worthy of Prokofiev.
He's turning his riff here.
You've got all of that and then you get the guitar notes, [A] tapping, sweep picking, octave jumps.
[C] And I think the whole thing is [A] bound together with Phil's extraordinary drumming.
A jazz rock [Am] drummer [D] let loose amongst [A] all these different styles that are going on.
You've got part rock, you've got part classical.
I can't play you the whole [B] tune, that would take
all night.
But [Am]
[C#] by the time it comes to the end of the song, [E] you've got this kind of resigned,
[A] garden gnomes fading out on the very end.
[G] [A]
