Hey [N] guys, thanks for watching week 19 of Solo A Week.
I think it's pretty safe to say that the first five minutes of the movie Top Gun are a pretty
kick-ass five minutes for guitar between the instrumental opening theme song and then this
solo from Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone that comes right after it.
It's just a great solo and it's actually not too challenging.
I'm going to slow it down in the lesson and show you guys some of the faster parts.
But the great thing about this solo is you can just crank it up really loud and just tear it up.
You got to throw your aviator glasses on obviously because it's an integral part of the solo and
preferably play it on the deck of an aircraft carrier or something similar.

It's a Top Gun joke and it was a bad one.

I've gotten some questions about why there's no longer an amp behind me and what I'm doing tone-wise
and that sort of thing, what gear I'm using for Solo A Week.
So I'm going to give you guys a little rig rundown after the lesson and show you kind of what I'm
using to answer some questions on that front.
Here comes the lesson.
All right, so the first thing you got to do to play this solo is tune all the strings on your
guitar a half step down.
So instead of E, A, D, G, B, E, you'll have E flat, A flat, D flat, G flat, B flat, and E flat.
Basically just throw a flat on every string.
[Eb] So it's going to sound like this.
[Ab] [Db]
[Gb] [Bb]
[Eb]
[Ebm] All right.
[Ab]
[Eb] [Ab]
[Eb]
[Ebm]
[Bm] [Ab]
[Gb] [B] [Db]
[Eb]
[Ab] All right, so I've gotten a couple of questions [N] in comments and in messages from people who've been
watching about my gear and what I'm using to get all the different tones that I get each week.
Usually it's a different tone because I'm doing a soloist from a different era or it has an effect
on it or that sort of thing.
Up until about three, I think three solo weeks ago, I was using the Line 6 Beta 2 amplifier,
which is a modeling combo amp.
And a lot of people noticed that it recently has disappeared from the background.
A couple of those, I just didn't have it in the shot because it was near my Pro Tools rig.
The last three weeks, that's due to the fact that I've just gotten this, which is the Fractal Audio Systems
AXSPEX II.
It is really just an unbelievable unit.
It's not a modeler in the strict sense of the word, but it is infinitely, unspeakably better than
every other modeler out there by leaps and bounds.
And also, it sounds better than a lot of amplifiers I've played through.
It's really just an incredibly versatile unit, and I'm going to be using it for the foreseeable future here.
I want to show you about a couple of tones I've used, I guess, on this, because people
want to know who are using this unit, what I've done to get them.
Basically, for the first week that I was using this for, which was Jessie's Girl, I think
that was week
That'd be week 17, I guess, I used preset 24, I think, which is the Friedman HPE.
And last week, I used a custom preset that is called Solo Week Lead, aptly enough, for
the Afterlife Solo.
Basically, what that is, is just FAS Modern, FAS Lead 2, with a lot of EQ in the amp block
to try and match the tone I was using on my beta before the lead.
And there's a drive pedal in front of it, as you can see on the AXS edit here, looking at it.
Basically, I'm going to [B] just
It's that kind of basic metal [A] lead.
[N] And then for this week, I have Solo Week Lead 2, which is kind of a more 80s high gain lead
with a lot of ambience and delay.
And I based it off the Ferris Wheel patch.
I'm not sure about the number of that, but it's pretty different from how it was in that.
There's a couple [A] of things I've done to the drive, and if you'll notice, my guitar is
tuned in [E] standard right now.
[D] To do the solo, I've actually thrown a pitch block in there, because I don't want to tune
my guitar down, because that's a pain in the ass, especially with a floating tremolo.
So I've just tuned the [Eb] guitar down a half step.
[F] [Abm]
[Eb] [N] And it sounds awesome.
No one would ever guess that I hadn't actually tuned my guitar down.
So those are the two Solo Week patches I've been using with the AXSpects, and I suppose
if I do solos that vary in tone from those two in the future, I might make some new presets
or go off of some of the Incredible Factory presets that are on the thing.
Hope you guys enjoyed this little rig rundown.
I also have off-camera a Freckle Audio Systems MSC-101 sitting over there as a foot controller.
That's why I keep looking down there with the names of the presets.
Anyway, I'm going to throw some screenshots up in this area after I film this video,
so you guys can see exactly what I'm doing over
