_ _ [Eb] _ _ _ [F] _ _
[E] Yves Montand did [G] everything he could to [Dm] popularize le feuille mortaise.
And this song has returned the [Gm] favor.
He is the international embodiment of this.
[C] It's like, [Gm] I'm not a hero.
For all of [A] us, it's a song by Daniel Balavoine.
[C] But if I tell you that he didn't originally write it for himself, you'll have a hard time believing me.
[Ab] And yet I'm not [Bb] a hero.
_ _ [Eb] _ _ _ [G] _ _
[Cm] _ _ At the beginning of the [Ab] 80s, Daniel Balavoine was on the rise.
He made a big splash with [F] his song, Le Chanteur, and [F] he also came into the spotlight with his
[Ab] participation in the musical star, Béminia.
_ [Bb] So when he sang, I'm not a hero, the audience was touched by [Eb] this song with autobiographical overtones. _
[C] _ He was someone who had his own opinion [Ab] and wanted to shout, I'm not a hero, I'm normal.
I'm a normal human being.
Béminia.
_ So stop [B] treating me like a god.
[Em] That's where what I'm about to tell you will certainly surprise you.
In reality, Daniel Balavoine didn't write this song to talk about [D] his own state of mind
and lift the veil [E] on his life as an artist.
Well, his [Db] inspiration comes from another [A] star.
The one [E] who shouts, I'm not a hero, to [B] Daniel is [A] Johnny Adams.
He told [B] us during rehearsal that Johnny had asked for it and he already had a few ideas.
In fact, he decided to write a song about Johnny.
So to do that, he had to go and see for himself.
He had to understand how he lives, what's going on around him and so on.
[C] _ Daniel was over the moon.
Johnny Allard himself had commissioned him to write it.
This rock and roll star had always fascinated him and many people would like to write a
song for him.
When he wrote I'm not a hero to him, Balavoine [Ab] was convinced he had hit the nail on the head.
Eager to let him listen to the song, he took him out in his car one evening. _
[Bb] They drove around [G] the ring road 10 times so that Daniel wouldn't stop playing the cassette
of the demo of his song so that Johnny would listen to it and really get it in his head.
But he had the [Bb] impression that Johnny and Koof were the [F] same.
Maybe they were a little bit screwed up.
I don't know.
For Daniel [Ab] Balavoine, it was a cold shower.
Johnny made him understand that his song wasn't much better [Eb] than any other.
At best, it would complete his upcoming album.
[Cm] And I'm not a [G] hero, it's coming out on the studio.
Problem from now on, is it being released as a single?
In other words, it's a [Ab] dull song.
[Bm] I'm_
I'm not a hero, but [G] you don't give me a hard time.
_ [E] _ _ _ _
_ What did this kid just sing?
[Gb] Johnny doesn't really understand this song.
He's making it out to be an ordinary song.
He's making it out to be a very, very ordinary song.
Maybe [Eb] because he's always sung [Bb] that he's a hero.
_ The months [F] go by and Daniel Balavoine's frustration only grows.
[Ab] His song was forgotten even though he was convinced that I'm not a hero could become a [Eb] hit.
Furthermore, the lyrics were becoming more and more relevant to him.
[G] So he decided to sing it himself.
And that, when the magic [Cm] happened.
[G] That's why I'm tired today.
That's why today I want to shout.
_ _ [C] _
_ _ _ _ [Ab] Don't get me wrong. _
_ [F] _ _ _ [Ab] Don't worry about what the newspaper says.
_ _ [E] _ _ _ [Gm] _ _
[Eb] _ _ [N] At that time, Balavoine wasn't quite at Johnny's level, but he was getting close.
But he was becoming one of the biggest French stars.
And at that time, he really had the legitimacy to sing the song that Johnny couldn't [Cm] sing.
_ _ _ _ _ [Ab] Unfortunately, in January 1986, Daniel Balavoine was [G] cut down at the height of his fame at
the age of 33.
[Ab] His death in a helicopter crash during a humanitarian mission in [Cm] Africa left his fans in shock.
_ _ Johnny Aliid, also deeply moved, paid tribute to him by singing his song again.
This time, he seemed to have understood every word, every emotion that Daniel Balavoine
had put into it.
He did a magnificent job of [B] honoring the gift he had received a few years earlier.
[A] _ _ _ [G] _ I loved him.
I don't know anything.
[D] _ Really excellent.
If [Cm] Daniel had seen that, he would have been very happy.
I'm not a hero. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ I'm [Ab] not a hero.
Ended up fitting Daniel [Cm] Balavoine's skin so well [F] that we now think that Johnny simply copied it.
Destiny.
