I'm going to sing the wee song that she wrote.
She wrote it about the island that she comes from.
This is her cousin, Mamie, that's beside her.
And both of them were born and brought up on Owey Island.
It's just between
Well, it's between Arranmore and Gola and Torrey
and all of those other islands.
And in the mid-'70s, on the last day that everybody was leaving the island,
because, I suppose, life was difficult and they couldn't survive,
and they all moved to the mainland.
My mother realised there was nothing ever written about her home.
So she jotted down these words,
and this is the song that became My Lovely Island Home.
[Ab] [Eb]
[F] [Eb]
[Ab] [Eb]
[F] As [Eb] I sit here sadly thinking how
[Ab] The years go swiftly past
[Bb] My thoughts go back to my childhood days
[Fm] When I [Bb] was but [Eb] a lad
[Bb] [Eb] And we a happy family [Ab] gathered round
Our turf [Fm] fire bright
[Bb] And the fairy tales our parents told
On the cold, dark, [Eb] wintery nights
My brothers, they are married now
[Ab]
With families of their own
[Bb] My sister lives in the USA
[Ab] In her grand [Bb] Long Island [Eb]
home
[Bb] [Eb] She pays a visit now and then
[Ab] To greet us, one [Fm]
and all
Then [Bb] our thoughts go back to those happy times
In our home in [Eb]
Donegal
My [Ab] island home
[Bb] Where I [Eb]
was born
Oh, how [Fm] I miss [Bb]
those days [Eb]
long gone
The [F] [Ab] little burn
Where [Bb] I [Eb]
would play
Oh, how [Fm] I long
[Bb]
For [Eb]
yesterday
If I could [Ab]
return
[Bb] I'd [Eb] never more roam
[Gm] [Cm]
[Eb] Forever [Fm] to stay
[Bb] In my old [Eb] island home
[Ab] [Eb]
[F] [E]
[A] [E]
[B] [E] My island home
Lies empty now
[A]
The clock hangs on the wall
The
[B] fireside chair
It still sits there
[A]
There's a [B] padlock on [E] the door
The raging seas
And the wintry winds
[A]
And the seagulls wearily [Gbm]
cry
But [B] no fire burns bright
In our hearth tonight
As it did in days [E] gone by
So fare thee well, my island home
[A] Where I spent many happy days
[B] And fare thee well to my friends so dear
[A] Who have crossed [B] the ocean [E]
waves
May God protect and guide you all
[A]
Wherever you [Gbm] may roam
[B] For Owee was like heaven to us
In our lovely [E] island home
[Gb] My [A] island home
Where [B] [E] I was born
Oh, how [Gbm] I miss [A]
[B] those days [E] long gone
The [Gbm] [A] little burn
Where [B] I [E]
would play
Oh, how [Gbm] I long
[B]
For [E]
yesterday
If I could [A]
return
[B] I'd never [E] more roam
[Abm] [Dbm]
[E] Forever [Gbm] to stay
[B]
In my old [E] island home
[A] [E]
Forever [Gbm] to stay
[B]
In my old [E] island home
[A] [E] [B]
