[A]
[E] [B] [E]
[B] All right, I'm going to talk about
Merle Travis style of picking right now
That little song right there.
I'm sure you all heard that before
Let me play that real slow for you.
[E] [B]
[D#]
[Em]
[A] [F#m]
[E] [F#]
[E] [Em]
[E] [A]
[E] [A#] [B]
[A] [E] [A]
[E] All right, basically [B] this type of playing is
[E] Conceived from ragtime piano I suppose is what it sounds like to me
And this is very very difficult to explain this method of doing this
We might have to cover more of that in a future edition of this
Let me try this without no any left hand whatsoever and the bass
Rolls like so from the six to the four to the five to the four
[A] [D]
[A] [Bm] Let me turn this echo off [E] [D] [A] [D]
all this is done with the pick
[E]
[A] [D] [E] [D]
And you stagger the melody lines with it?
[E] [B]
[D#] [C#m] [E]
All right, no left hand whatsoever.
I'm gonna do that just the right hand picking pattern
[G] [Em]
[E] [A]
[E]
Now add the left [B] hand
So [E] [Em]
[E]
[B]
[E]
that is a brief introduction into Merle Travis
Here's another thing that Travis did
That goes like this
[Bm] [A]
[G#m] [B]
[F] [B] [E]
Sounds harder than it really is.
It's a right hand picking pattern that goes
[G]
[D] [G] [E] That's six [A] four five [E] three
[D]
[A] [E] [A]
[E] Six string and a fifth string are played with the pick
The other strings are played with the second and third finger
[A] [G] [A]
[G] At that point [E] you would play like an E chord
[A] Then you would play an F [F#m] sharp minor
[E] A G [Gm] minor
[G#m] a-flat minor
It comes up [Gm] [G#m] [E]
[Gm] [G#m] [E] [F#]
[Gm] [G#m] if you notice there's a little B string note that's bouncing around in there
[E]
[A] This is another little added [E] tidbit here
That's the [B] higher version of it
[F#] [G]
[G#m] [F#] Which case you use a chord that looks like this F sharp E and A
like this
[E]
[F#] [G#m] [B] And you go up to a and do the same [A] thing again [Bm] [C#]
[G#m] F sharp [A]
[B] B [A] descending [G#m] B
[F#m]
[E] [F#m] [G#m]
[A] [Bm] [C] [C#]
[F#] [G#m] [Am] [A#m]
[A] [G#m] [F#m] [E]
once more
With the echo because it sounds much better that way it sounds
[G#m]
[C#] [A]
[B] All right, kid.
You got that
[D] All right.
Here's another one boy.
This one's good for orange blossom special.
It's a forward backward roll combined [G] And
[C#] I can also play bozo with this like this
[E]
[B] Pretty silly, huh?
All right that one very slowly is a [A] forward roll
Then you come back to the we're on the E and D strings
[E] And you do an upstroke on a with the pick
And a downstroke on the E with the pick so [A]
you sit there and do this
This is the effortless way to play guitar.
Nobody's lazier than me and I figured all these things up so
Now when I play orange blossom special when it gets to warp factor 10, I do that
[G] [E] [B]
[E] [B] [E]
[C#] [G] So that thing was
Done on from the D to the B string and we [E] might do something like this
[D] [C#m] [Bm]
[A] [G] [F#m] [E]
[C#m] [C]
No charge for [B] mistakes
[A] [F#m]
So you [E] can sit home and mess with that E
[Bm] D
D flat [C#m] minor
B [Bm] minor a [A] a
[G] [Bm] G F sharp [F#m] minor
[E] E [Em] minor
[E]
Which is actually being used in the form of an a9 chord
This is an old banjo song here that has the bridge like that
[A]
[E] [D] [C]
[F#m] Then you [E] can throw in the Travis [F#m] stuff
[A] [Bm] [B]
[E] [B] Okay.
Here's another thing.
I'm going to show you here the foggy mountain banjo
