Hey guys, welcome to Rockin' the Country.
I'm Don and I'm doing a subscriber request.
Well kind of.
I'm doing Darryl Singletary's song, I Let Her Lie.
And it's from his 1995 album, Darryl Singletary, so it's his eponymous album.
Probably his debut album.
That tends to be when they [N] do albums by the artist's name.
Austin8693 and Jared Jones, your requests are coming soon of Darryl songs.
Because I have more Darryl lined up.
Some of you know I did one review already recently that Darryl had passed away and that
made me really sad.
I think it was mid-40s.
Anyway, but the guy is good.
And you guys turned me on to him.
Somebody recommended it and the [E] song, a prior song.
So we're going to get right into it.
Darryl Singletary's song, I Let Her Lie.
That could have multiple meanings so let's find out what that's about.
[B] [C#m] [A] [E]
[B] [C#m] [A] [E]
She'd come home, [B] 6am, [C#m]
tell me she'd been [A] out with friends.
And [E] I let her lie, [B] [C#m] [A] I [E] let her lie.
[B] [C#m] [A] [E] And in the glare [B] of the morning sun, [C#m] she swore I was [A] her only one.
And [E] I let her lie, [B] [C#m] [A] I [E] let her lie.
[B] I [E] let her stay in bed.
[B]
Cause the truth [C#m] was too hard to handle [A] and I [E] couldn't bear [B] to lose [E] that girl.
[B]
We were that [C#m] small town scandal, [A] but [E] she was [F#m] my [B] only world.
Ouch.
[E] One teary night, she [B] confessed her sins, [C#m] but she vowed to [A] never cheat again.
And [E] I let her lie, [B]
[C#m] [A] I let [E] her [B]
lie.
[C#m] [A] That's a non-starter for [E] me, man.
No, she tried, [B] Lord, she could not change.
[C#m] And I only have [A] myself to blame, cause [E] I let her lie.
[B] There you go.
[C#m] [A] I [E] let her [B] lie.
[E] [B] Cause the truth [C#m] was too hard to handle [A] and I [E] couldn't bear [B] to lose [E] that girl.
[B] We were that [C#m] small town scandal, [A] but [E] she was [F#m] my only [B] world.
Yeah, man.
[E] The day I left, [B] no words were said.
[C#m] She was sound asleep [A] on our double bed.
And [E] I let her lie.
[B] There you go.
[C#m]
[A] See ya, [E] baby.
I let her [B] lie.
[C#m]
[A] Can't cheat.
I [E] let her lie.
[B] [C#m]
[A] I [E] let her [B] lie.
[C#m]
[B] [F#m] [D#m] [E]
Yeah.
That's a simple song about cheating and a man's love.
But this song started with that lyric.
I almost guarantee it, that songwriter, the lyricist, [N] who came up with I let her lie,
saw that that has double meaning.
Probably there's more meanings than that even.
It could be a dog lying on the floor or whatever.
But with people, you can lie, like not tell the truth, or you can lie in bed.
And the songwriter said, you know what, I want to work a song out with that,
where I let her lie to me, and then when I left, I just let her stay in bed.
And I didn't even say goodbye.
And you know his heart was still breaking, because that's the way it works.
Even when you've been made a fool, like the Allman Brothers whipping post.
Greg is saying, I don't know why I let that mean woman make me out a fool.
But you do it for love.
And men cheat too, as we know.
And a woman is like, why did I stay with him?
I don't know.
It's just love will do that.
It doesn't so much blind you.
It does do that, but love will keep you hanging in there in the hopes of rectifying it.
And he did that.
In the song, she said, I'll stop.
I won't do it again after she confessed her sin, but she couldn't change.
Well, she probably could, but she didn't.
And that's a choice.
My estimation, that's a choice.
If you want to save something, then you save it.
And she didn't.
So he said, he didn't even say goodbye.
That might even be a lie for him if he said goodbye, because nothing was good about that.
He wanted to be with a woman, but you can't be with somebody if they're cheating.
Just can't.
I mean, some people can do it.
Not happily, I guess.
That's a non-starter for me.
Forget that.
But anyhow, all right, guys.
This is a simple song.
The whole song is [C#] built around that turn of a phrase.
So I'm going to give this one an 8.1.
I like Darrell's voice.
The prior song I did, I liked a lot.
And I've got a couple more in queue that I'm going to be reviewing soon, or reacting to soon, too.
But anyway, I like this song.
It's not a song that I would turn off if it came on the radio.
I would listen to it, and I would feel it.
All right, there it is, guys.
I'll see you on another video, and keep rocking the country.
