_ [E] _ Hey guys, it's Carl Brown from [F#] Guitar Lessons 365 _ .com.
Got a fun one today.
We're going to learn how to do Rebel Rebel by David Bowie.
So this one pretty much takes one classic guitar riff and just runs it through for four
and a half straight minutes.
_ There's a couple of chords thrown in here.
Every once in a while we'll cover those, but mainly we have that main [A] riff played.
_ [E] _ _ _ _
_ So if you don't like that riff, turn off the video now because it's pretty much what the
whole video is going to be.
[F#] _ Anyway, before I get into it, please subscribe to the channel if you have not already and

web, check out my guitar courses.

So let's jump into the track here.
We're in standard tuning.
[F] _
_ So we have basically David Bowie and Alan Parker playing the guitar parts here.
I don't know if _ there's some controversy about which parts Alan Parker added to the riff
or whatever, but _ we don't know.
So just everybody has different stories.
So let's start here.
We basically have this main riff that kind of [D]
starts_
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ [E] It's actually a good little exercise in _ kind of picking across strings, because you've
got to be pretty accurate with it.
So it's not the easiest thing maybe in the beginning, because it can be a little awkward
to play, but after you just lock into it, it's a really cool, little fun riff to play.
So now, there might be slight variations through the riff.
You _ [A] _ _
might actually, [C#m] when you're [E] playing little melody notes, you'll have like utter strings
like open I, E strings ringing [B] with it.
_ [E] _
So keep in mind, there's, you know, when you're doing this kind of thing, you're repeating
it, there might be a little slight variations, but we're just going to kind of take it down
like here's kind of the standard way they play the riff.
And as you play, if a couple strings get thrown in there, no big deal, it can happen to them as well.
So, but for the [D] most part, we have this, start with the open D [E] string, _ then the open high
E, _ _ _
[D] _ _ then three on the B, [A] _
_ and [D] two on the B. _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ Then just basically take it to an E [E] major chord. _ _ _
And you're going to really want to play this as kind of upstrokes. _ _
_ And as you play them, you really kind of accent the top strings.
_ So you really kind of, _ you could be just hitting the top three strings.
And then you kill the sound between each one.
_ _ You just bring your hand back down to another upstroke.
And just as you do that, you layer the palm down. _
_ _ [C#] So [D] this, _ _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ _
and then we're going to hit the low E string open.
_ _ And then we just play. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ So, so you went down and hit the low E string open, and then, _ _ and when you come back down
to pick this little melody, you can mute that low E.
Sometimes they _ might hear it ring a
little bit, but it's really just hit the low E.
[C#m] _ Then as you pick the next note, you mute that low E with your [E] palm down here.
[C#] _ _
Then what you do, basically you're still holding an E major chord.
You [E] _ put your pinky there at the second fret there on the B.
[C#] _
And you pick that [B] note, pull
off to the open B.
_ _ [G#] So that might be tricky for people, pulling off with your pinky is always fun.
[B] _ _ And then you're going to pick across the [G#] chord on the G string that you're holding at the first [E] fret. _
And then the second fret there on the D that you're holding.
So it is, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
as soon as you get to that, then you go [D] back to the open D that starts the
whole thing again.
_ _ _ [E] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _
So like I said, sometimes when you're playing that melody, [A] _ _
[C#m] _ you hear that, playing the notes
on B, you still [E] hear the high E string ringing with it.
Just kind of happens [A] sometimes.
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [F#]
All right, now from there we have a couple of, I just call them the pre-chorus sections
because it kind of happens before it goes into the chorus.
So that makes sense to call it pre-chorus.
_ We are basically an A major [A] chord.
_ _ _ _ _ However you like to play an A major to [D] a D. _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ And then it goes to a [F#] B minor chord with an F sharp in the bass.
So the fifth in the [Bm] bass.
_ _ [B] So that's basically just a full bar at the second fret.
And in front of that bar at the third fret, you're going to play on the B string, _ fourth
fret on the G and the fourth fret on the D.
So remember, it's just like a [Bm] regular D [F#] minor.
[B] It's got that F sharp in the bass there.
_ [Bm] _ _ And then the first time you hear [E] it, it does a little slide and then goes down to that
E major chord.
So it's kind of a four chord progression.
[A] So we have this.
_ _ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ [Bm] _ _ _ [A] _
_ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [A] And then we go to the chorus, [D] which is really that _ same main [E] riff played three times _ _ [D] _ _
_ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ with
this [E] different ending. _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ [G] _
_ [G#] _ [D] _ _ _ [B] So that's, that kind of happens like it goes back.
_ _ _ [Em] _
After that pre-chorus riff, we basically play that main riff [D] _ [E] three times. _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ _ [E] _ _ _ _
_ [D] And then after three times of that riff, we just go to a D major chord, _ let it ring.
_ [G] And then to [E] an E major chord.
And _ _ _ then we're going to jump, [G] _ _ go to the third fret on the low E string and just pick it
_ [G#] _ and slowly bend [G] it up a little bit.
_ [D] _ _ [G] And then kind of use that as a way [D] to _ ramp into the open D string.
_ _ _ _ [G] _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ [E] Once you get that open D, [D] it's the beginning of the riff again.
_ [E] _ _
_ _ _ [D] _ _ [E] _ So at the, the only thing that's really, it kind of repeats all that stuff over and over again.
At the end of the song, we have that riff. _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ [D] _
_ _ And at the very end, you'll hear the song just, he does that riff and just jumps right
into a D major chord and just hold it.
And that's the, [E] that ring for the end of the song.
So it's a very simple song, but it can kind of, it's kind of a simply laid out song.
It's really the same riff repeated 95% of the song, but the riff [D] itself can be _ _ a little tricky.
_ [D] _
You got to know where your [E] strings are at.
_ _ _ [D] _
[Em] Alright, so it's a good exercise for that if you have an issue finding the right strings
since it kind of jumps around and it's kind of intricate in that way.
Alright, but I hope you guys enjoyed it and you can rock out with it.
It's a fun riff to play.
And once you get this down, you're pretty much got one of the David Bowie's biggest hits down.
_ Can't beat that.
Alright, I'll see you guys again soon for Guitar Lessons 365.com. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
