[C] Paul came out here and he worked with some [G] of the best and some of the top [C] South African musicians, a lot of them.
[F] [G] And I probably had the privilege [C] of being one of the few artists [F] that [G] Paul didn't record with [C] when he was here at that time.
[G]
[C] But nevertheless I did get [G] invited to go up [C] to the studios and to meet with Paul [F] Simon, [G] which was a great [C] moment for me.
[F] Because I discovered that the [G] man is not how shorter [C] than I am.
But [G] while [C]
I was there I [F] thought, listen, [G] I'm just going to take a chance and I'm [C] going to invite him [F] to [G] come down to Cape Town.
How can you come to South Africa and not see Cape Town?
[C] [G]
[C] [F] So [G]
I was actually not [F] expecting him [G] to take me up on my offer.
[C] Because he's Paul Simon after all and what would he want to come down to?
Anyway, I got [G] this phone call from his manager on a Saturday afternoon, a week later, to say that they were here at the airport and would I please [C] come and fetch them.
[F]
[G] So I went out there and picked them up and they wanted to have a look around the Cape Peninsula.
So I drove them around and showed them all the nice sights and [F] pretty [G] things and ugly things, [C] all kinds of things.
[G] And we eventually [C] got down to the [G] nature reserve there at Cape Point.
[C]
[G] And [F] there I had [G] what was probably the [C] nicest experience [F] of my whole musical [G] career.
[C] Because you see, there we were [G] standing when a tour bus [C] arrived.
[G] And the tourists get out [C] and they spot [F] me.
[G]
[C] [F] [G]
[C] [G] Now this is true.
[C] Now [F] this is true.
[G]
[C] And there I was, [F] signing [G] autographs and Paul Simon watching me.
[C] Hey, [F] [G] [C]
what a feeling, what a feeling.
[F] [G]
[C] [G]
[C] [G]
[C] I don't know what he felt like [F] but I know [G] I liked it.
[C] So we went home to my house that evening and we [G] had a braai [C] and we sat there and we spoke about the stars.
And after a while, Paul kind [G] of mellowed out a little bit and [C] he said,
would we like to hear some of the [G] songs that he's been working [C] on while he's here in South Africa?
And so I said, [F] yeah.
[G] He picked up the guitar and [C] he sang us some of the songs from the Graceland [G] album,
which was, as you can imagine, [C] kind of a quite amazing [F] experience.
[G]
And then he handed [C] me the guitar and he said, would I sing [G] him [C] one of my songs?
[F] [G] [C]
And for a moment [G] there, [C] I didn't really know what to [F] do, you know.
[G] I [C] mean, so [Dm] the first thing that came [G] into my head was [C] this song, Weskos Klong.
[G] So I sang [C] it for him.
[F] [G]
[C] And [Am] when I finished, [G]
[C] he says to me, what [G] kind of sound is [C] that?
I [G] said, no, Paul, we [C] call that the West Coast sound.
[F] [G]
[C] He said, [G] could I take a cassette [C] of it back to [G] New York?
I said, sure, fine.
[C] I gave him the cassette and [F] [G] off he went.
[C]
And I don't know how it happened, you know.
I [F] suppose [G] a Bob Dylan must have popped [C] around his apartment or something, you know, [G] coffee.
[C] [A] You know, you don't know what the hell's [G] get up to there.
[C] So, because I, [A] that's [G] true.
[C] So, [G] because I get this phone [C] call from a Bob Dylan, you see.
[G] And he says to [C] me, would I mind if he [Am] does a cover [G] version of [C] this song that he heard at Paul Simon's?
[G]
[C] I said to him, [Am] oh Bob.
[G]
I said, oh Bob, let me think about [C] it, alright.
[G]
[C] I [Am] said, I'll tell you what, I'll tell you [G] what, why don't you send me a demo, you know.
[C] And then we'll see.
[G]
So, the demo drops.
