Heart of Glass, Call Me, Rapture, more than 30 years have passed since these songs made their chart debut
but the Blondie hits are still as popular today as they were in the 70s and 80s.
Yeah, Blondie have sold more than 40 million albums to date
with hit singles going platinum multiple times over
and the woman responsible for them all is of course Deborah Harry.
She's [A] behind some of the most enduring hits in music history.
[D]
[F] [G] [A#]
[D] Deborah Harry, [Am] Blondie frontwoman, [Em] solo [B] artist
[A]
[D] [E] and punk rock [D] legend.
When Blondie burst onto the charts in the mid 70s, they were new wave trailblazers.
Heart of Glass shot to number one around the globe late that decade.
[C#] [C#m]
[E] [E] Not just a writer, [F#] Harry is a reinventor.
[B] [E]
[F#] In [B] the 80s she breathed new life into [E] The Tide Is High, [D#m] turning the reggae song [B] into a smash.
After breaking up, then making up [F#m] and entering rock and roll's hall of fame,
[B] Blondie is now launching a new assault on the music [F#m] scene,
[F#] releasing Practice Makes [E] Perfect ahead of their [B] Aussie tour.
And Deborah Harry joins us [N] now live from New York.
Great to have you on the show Deborah.
Your Aussie tour kicks off next month.
How much are you looking forward to being back on the road so to speak?
Oh, I think I'm looking forward to it a lot.
We just finished a tour in the States with Devo and that was really a lot of fun.
Great to work with those guys again.
Then we had a little bit of a break and now we're coming over to see you guys.
Good stuff.
Cool.
Now is there anything in particular you're hoping to do or see while you're over here?
I'm having what?
When you're heading to our shores, is there anything in particular you want to do when you get here?
Well, I don't know, probably
See a koala?
I don't know, maybe power sailing or something like that.
That sounds good.
We'll arrange that for you.
What are we going to hear on this tour Deborah?
Is it the classic hits?
Yes, of course.
We have to play our classic hits otherwise we get in a lot of trouble with the fans.
[C#m]
[C#] [Am] We are trying to mix it up with our latest [D] songs [C] and a few surprises [G] here and there.
[A#] We've added a lot of [D] video to our show this time.
Now [F] it's been almost 40 years [G] since Blondie got together.
[A#] Does it surprise you how enduring [D] your songs have been?
[F] It is [G] kind of surprising.
I [A#] think a lot of that credit should [Dm] go to Mike Chapman actually
[G] who is [E] Australian and [A] a great songwriter in his own right.
And [C#] he really was instrumental in helping us create that sound.
[E]
Deborah, music critics have said if Deborah Harry the singer never existed
nor would the likes of Madonna or Lady Gaga, how does that sit with you?
Do you consider yourself somewhat of a trailblazer?
Do you feel like you are the woman out there in front of rock,
sort of blazing that trail for others to come after you?
That's pretty major.
Yes, I used to carry a large stick with me at all times
and smashing people out of the way.
In a way, yes, I guess [C] there weren't that many girls doing [C#m] what I was doing at the time.
[E] But I think we've all evolved and the music scene has opened up [B] for girls,
[A] for boys, for [E] gay people, for everybody.
And [C#m] really that's [Em] what it's about.
It's about music.
That's the important part.
At the moment, what do you think of other artists currently in the charts?
Who are you a fan of?
Well, [B] I have a lot of favourites.
[E]
I think I really like the regular top ten kind of stuff.
For me, it really depends on the song.
Some of the songs I feel like, okay, maybe they're just flogging that
but it's not really my favourite thing.
But there's been some great material out in the last few years.
I'm always surprised when people say,
oh, the songs are no good now, the music is no good now.
The music is great now and the production is really great.
One of my favourites is Calvin Harris, by the way.
Good stuff.
Lovely to chat to you, Deborah.
We look forward to having you in our country next month.
Can't wait.
