Hey, I'm Declan McKenna on El Quinto Beatel.
[C] [G] [D]
[Em] [C] [G] [D]
[C] There is [G] that thing of [D] having four friends [Em] with you on stage,
[C] and [G] not having to worry about everything yourself,
[D] knowing that they're going to play all the parts,
and just [Dm] completely relying on [C] yourself.
You can focus more on [G]
being an entertainer, being a [D] performer,
and just having fun with the live show,
[Em] because I think that's [C] the most important thing for anyone.
[G] It's all [D] about just energy and having fun,
and everyone enjoying [C] themselves as much as possible.
I've only released so many songs,
[G] and I have some that are [D] about myself and about my own stuff going on.
And so I [G] think in that sense, I've developed a thing
for writing about things to see in the news and in the world
that doesn't necessarily affect me directly,
but I think when people look at the politics of the world
and all the stuff going on, it is important to look at things
that don't [D] directly affect yourself, because people can get
caught up in their own problems, which [G] are generally quite minor.
And [C] I don't know, I tend to be kind of like an empathetic person,
so I [A] like to write about [G] things and talk about things,
even if they're not really directly affecting me,
because I think there's a lot of room for change in the world,
and sometimes I think it's just nice to write about different things.
It keeps it exciting, I guess.
[Em]
[D]
[C]
[G] [Em] [C]
[Em] You kind of have to not worry too much when you're writing about
these [G] sorts of things.
You're not always going to get it right.
[E] You're not always going to have the right [Am]
view [C] on everything
you're writing about.
I think a lot of the time, you know,
music and movies and TV and whatever that's directed [G] at young people,
isn't made by young people, isn't, you know, generally,
isn't in the best interests [C] of young people.
I think, you know, I guess in what I've done, I've [G] made a point
of [C] being young and not being [G] ignorant, not being lazy,
because I think these are impressions that people [Em] often have
of young people, [C] and I think it's all a bit of a misconception.
And so I think, as an artist, especially [G] in the last couple of months,
[E] I've just been thinking a lot about, you know, standing up for,
like, the young [C] people and, you know, [G] getting younger people involved
in what I'm [D] doing, you know, with the music videos,
with all of these sorts of things, to show, you know,
there is a younger generation that's engaged and that is [Em] doing things
and isn't lazy and isn't ignorant.
[G] And, yeah, I guess I've kind of tried to [G] be part of that movement.
[D] [Em]
[C] [G]
[D] You know, it's [C] interesting.
People will generally, [G] like,
relate a lot of things [D] to my age, like, things that are completely
unconnected, you know, they'll be [C] like, oh, you can tell that he's young
[G] because of this, or you can tell he's young because of this,
and it's [D] like, it's generally not the case.
It's kind of, [C] I don't know,
there's a massive, [G] like, misconception of relating, you [D] know,
things that people talk about, things that people do to their age,
and, you know, my age comes into it, but [G] it's a very small part [N] of who I am.
So, that's me.
You might be wondering how I got into this situation.
I try and stay as natural as possible in social media.
I don't try too hard to, like, make everything [G] look a certain way
or feel a certain way.
I tend to be kind of just quite myself.
It's nice every now and then to just talk to people and be kind of
a normal human being, rather than trying to [E] present yourself
as some kind of [D] special person, or like, special musician [D#] who's amazing.
[G] You know, you do miss that element of talking to people your own age
because people who are young see their friends every day at school
or at college or whatever, and you miss that.
But social media is like the sort of next best [F#] thing.
[C#]
[D#]
[Fm] [F#]
Making things that are [F] hopeful, making things that are positive,
especially when you're writing about things that [A#m] don't directly affect [B] yourself.
[G] You know, you can't tell [C#] people who are going through [F#] certain things
that things are going to be bad.
[C#] I think about making positive things out [D#m] of the negative
and [A#]
showing that it's [B] not all bad and, [A#] you know, change is [F#] happening.
[D#m] [A#m] [Fm]
[F#] [D#m] [A#m]
[Fm] [F#] I'm not here [G#] to be judging all the other musicians my [Fm] age around
because I think a lot of them are very, very [F#] talented.
[D#] There's a lot of really, really cool musicians, you know.
[Bm] There's room for [C#m] everything, and I think it's just nice to see
that there is a lot of young people making music.
I'm not here to judge [A] [E]
all [C#] the [A] other musicians my age around
[Em]
because I think a lot of young people [C#] are very, [C#m] very talented.
[G#] There's room for everything, and I think it's just nice to see
There's lots of, [B] you know, people trying to branch out a little bit
in the pop world, but [D]
I don't listen to loads of [N] pop at the minute
because a lot of it can be competitive.
[C#m] But I think modern [Cm] music has [G] as much good and bad as there has ever been.
There's some [C] fantastic stuff that came out recently.
[F#] We had like Tame Impala's album, which did really well.
[G#] Foals, Unimmortal [Bm] Orchestra.
There's a lot of cool and [F#m] interesting bands.
I wrote all on my own ten out of the eleven songs on the album
and the eleventh one [G] I co-wrote with someone, basically just a friend.
[D#] So it's only me.
[N] I don't really have any pressure to do a certain thing
or make a certain type of sound.
I don't know.
I think what I've made over the last few years, it's been changing,
it's been getting better, but I think it's good.
And I think the album that I've made now is good and I'm happy with it.
And I don't think it's the best album I'm ever going to [Em] make.
I think I'm a much better songwriter now than I was [G#] when I wrote
the first couple of songs for the album.
But I really, really like it.
And I think [F#] it's a very [G#] nice start and it [C] leads me on to better things.
And I've had the [C] sort of freedom to do [C#m] that and to grow and develop
quite naturally, which is good.
[G#m] [A]
[E] [C#m] [G#m]
[E] [C#m] [G#m] [A]
[E] [C#m] [G#m]
[E] [C#m] [E] [A]
[E] [C#m] I think [E] [A]
[E] [C#m] [B] [A]
[E] I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a [E] lot of things I want to do.

like, the young [C] people and, you know, [G] getting younger people involved
in what I'm [D] doing, you know, with the music videos,
with all of these sorts of things, to show, you know,
there is a younger generation that's engaged and that is [Em] doing things
and isn't lazy and isn't ignorant.
[G] And, yeah, I guess I've kind of tried to [G] be part of that movement.
_ [D] _ _ [Em] _
_ [C] _ _ _ _ [G] _ _ _
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ You know, it's [C] interesting.
People will generally, [G] like,
relate a lot of things [D] to my age, like, things that are completely
unconnected, you know, they'll be [C] like, oh, you can tell that he's young
[G] because of this, or you can tell he's young because of this,
and it's [D] like, it's generally not the case.
It's kind of, [C] I don't know,
there's a massive, [G] like, _ misconception of relating, you [D] know,
things that people talk about, things that people do to their age,
and, you know, my age comes into it, but [G] it's a very small part [N] of who I am.
So, that's me.
You might be wondering how I got into this situation.
I try and stay as natural as possible in social media.
I don't try too hard to, like, _ make everything [G] look a certain way
or feel a certain way.
I tend to be kind of just quite myself.
It's nice every now and then to just talk to people and be kind of
a normal human being, rather than trying to [E] present yourself
as some kind of _ [D] special person, or like, special musician [D#] who's amazing.
[G] You know, you do miss that element of talking to people your own age
because people who are young see their friends every day at school
or at college or whatever, and you miss that.
But social media is like the sort of next best [F#] thing.
_ [C#] _ _ _
_ [D#] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [Fm] _ _ _ [F#] _ _ _ _
_ _ Making things that are [F] hopeful, making things that are positive,
especially when you're writing about things that [A#m] don't directly affect [B] yourself.
[G] You know, you can't tell [C#] people who are going through [F#] certain things
that things are going to be bad.
[C#] I think about making positive things out [D#m] of the negative
and [A#]
showing that it's [B] not all bad and, [A#] you know, change is [F#] happening. _ _
_ [D#m] _ _ _ [A#m] _ _ _ [Fm] _
_ _ [F#] _ _ _ [D#m] _ _ [A#m] _
_ _ _ [Fm] _ _ [F#] I'm not here [G#] to be judging all the other musicians my [Fm] age around
because I think a lot of them are very, very [F#] talented.
[D#] There's a lot of really, really cool musicians, you know.
[Bm] There's room for [C#m] everything, and I think it's just nice to see
that there is a lot of young people making music. _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
I'm not here to judge [A] _ _ [E]
all [C#] _ _ the [A] other musicians my age around
_ [Em]
because I think a lot of young people [C#] are very, _ [C#m] very talented.
_ _ _ [G#] There's room for everything, and I think it's just nice to see
There's lots of, [B] you know, people trying to branch out a little bit
in the pop world, but [D]
I don't listen to loads of [N] pop at the minute
because a lot of it can be competitive.
[C#m] But _ I think modern [Cm] music has _ [G] as much good and bad as there has ever been.
There's some [C] fantastic stuff that came out recently.
[F#] We had like Tame Impala's album, which did really well.
_ [G#] Foals, Unimmortal [Bm] Orchestra.
There's a lot of cool and [F#m] interesting bands.
_ I wrote all on my own ten out of the eleven songs on the album
and the eleventh one [G] I co-wrote with someone, basically just a friend. _
[D#] So it's only me.
_ _ [N] I don't really have any pressure to do a certain thing
or make a certain type of sound.

_ [E] _ [C#m] I think [E] _ _ [A] _
_ [E] _ _ [C#m] _ _ [B] _ _ [A] _
[E] I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do. _ _
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a lot of things I want to do.
I think I've got a [E] lot of things I want to do.
