Jam Along & Learn...
Deep Ebblin' Rock was out and the record company decided that there wasn't a single on it,
didn't worry us one bit.
opinion that in England singles didn't really matter for a band of our type.
Whether we were right or wrong, I don't know, but that's just the stance that we took, maybe a little self-consciously.
But the record company insisted and insisted,
we were trundled into a studio in Queensway and told to write one.
nothing less likely to make you write a single than that.
You know, do it.

_ _ Deep Ebblin' Rock was out and the _ record company decided that there wasn't a single on it,
_ _ _ which didn't worry us one bit.
We were of the opinion that in England _ _ singles didn't really matter for a band of our type. _ _ _ _ _
Whether we were right or wrong, I don't know, but that's just the _ stance that we took, _ maybe a little self-consciously.
No, we don't do singles, man. _
_ _ But the record company _ insisted and insisted,
so _ _ we were trundled into _ a studio in _ _ Queensway _ _ _ and told to write one.
Well, you know, there's nothing _ less likely to make you write a single _ than that. _ _ _ _
You know, do it.
You've got four hours.
So we went through all sorts of bits and pieces, found a couple of little odd ideas,
but nothing that floated our boat particularly.
_ _ _ So we did what all proper rock bands do, is we went to the pub.
_ _ _ And the drink of the day, I believe, was Scotch and Coke. _ _ _
So we had a few of those. _ _ _
_ _ _ Weaved our way rather uncertainly back into the studio _ _ and _ _ _ grinned at each other for a while.
And _ then Richie said, _ _ _ again, what about that _ _ version of Ricky Nelson's Summertime from the Gershwin song?
_ _ And we went, yeah.
He said, well, there's a little riff under there.
_ _ Which_
_ _ But it just went round and round. _
_ _ So we kind of played it around and round and it got very quickly very boring. _ _ _
One of us, who knows who, came up with the idea of putting a turnaround in it. _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ Which made it a little less repetitive and boring.
And then Ian Pace did one of these magical little things where one of those drum breaks that he used to come up with _ in those days. _
_ _ What are you doing there, Ian?
I have no idea.
It just fits, you know.
So that was cool. _ _ _
Suddenly we had a sort of a structure. _ _
_ _ _ And we came up with about three minutes of this thing.
And _ it was rocking on quite nicely.
And Gillan disappeared into a corner and came back with a set of utterly nonsensical lyrics. _
Which, they mean _ absolutely nothing as far as I can tell.
I think, _ _ at the time, I do remember, in spite of the Scotch and Coke, him _ saying_
I think Roger might have thrown in a couple of rhymes. _ _ _ _
And then we had Black Night.
_ _ _ Spelling is _ _ important there.
We never knew whether it was N-I-G-H-T or K-N-I-G-H-T.
So it's either about a chess piece or a particularly cloudy English winter evening.
I'm not quite sure. _ _ _ _ _
