[Am]
A few times on this record we'd loosely start working on a song.
[A] They want me to sing so they can [Am] start building the song around it.
And I'd been working [Am] on these songs for a couple of months
before we started recording.
Martin gave me all the demos,
set up a vocal mic through the speakers, and I start just singing.
It was you that took my soul
[A] And threw it in the [Am] fire
After I finished, I turned around and Martin just looked at me
and nodded his head like this.
You [G] know, that was the best feeling.
It's obvious that [E] when we get together and Dave starts singing the songs
that I've demoed at home, it doesn't matter how good the demo is,
the moment [Fm] Dave's voice goes on it, it kind of gives [Am] it a stamp of approval
and a stamp of authority.
If we're about to make a record or we're talking about making a record,
he will go into his studio and start to formulate ideas
to see if something's happening, you know, see [A] if it's percolating.
For the first time ever really,
when the band and Ben listened to the [G] songs, the demos for the first time,
we were [E] amazed by the quality of the songs,
but [G] particularly amazed in the direction.
I think it made the [Fm] recording of this record a lot easier
because we [Am] had a basic template
that [G] we knew that we liked.
[Dm] [Am] Strongly drawing on a blues influence,
that [F] Delta blues thing.
[C]
[D] [Am]
Crawling, [A] a bit sleazy, [F] a bit dirty.
[G] Sometimes we [A] try out ten different approaches to it
and there'll usually be one that's reggae,
that never works, but we always try it.
Each [Am] song has a punch to it in some kind of way and it's direct
and if [Gb] that song's driven by a riff, we work around that.
If a song's driven by the vocal melody and the vocal part,
then everything's got to work around that.
A song [Bbm] like Heaven, for instance, was an obvious example of that,
where we were very conscious about not [Db] overworking the musical elements
[Eb] so they distracted from [Gb]
the [Bbm] vocal.
To me, [Db]
Heaven is one of [Eb] the reasons why I [Gb] still make music.
[Bbm]
Sometimes I [Ab] sigh away
[Eb] [Gb]
[Bbm] Silently I slowly [Ab]
lose [Db] [Gm] myself
[Gb] [Bbm] Once in a while a song comes along,
[Ab] something that I have to sing, not [Eb] something I want to sing.
[Gb] It feels like it's [Bbm] putting on a pair of boots
that I've worn for [Ab] years, that I love.
It fits.
[Eb]
[Gb] [Ebm]
I dissolve [Db] in [Bbm] interest
I knew that this was going to [Db] be the linchpin.
Everything has [Ebm] got to be as good as this.
I will [Db] sing with [Bbm] joy
[Db] Heaven is interesting [Eb] because [Ebm] Martin really cracked it with Heaven.
[Bbm] Pretty much, apart [Ab] from Dave's voice being there, but not Martin's voice,
[Gb] the actual finished thing is pretty similar.
Soothe My Soul is another.
A lot of the time when we start an album, we have a song
and it might work quite well, but we want to take it in a different direction
and make it better.
Martin has this [G] thing, he doesn't like sometimes the pop side of what we do,
but then he goes ahead and writes a pop tune.
And that took a lot of work.
I can go to [Gm] the south of Ireland.
Yeah, [Bb] I want to.
I love Southern Ireland.
[G]
Shall we do it?
Let's just do this really fast and we'll keep working [Ab] on the other one.
It [G] sounds really good.
I think it sounds better just [Ab] staying on that.
[D] I look forward to every day in the studio when we're working.
It's a joy to get up and go to work.

Yeah, it was really good.
But you only need, it's a loop.
It's playing the same thing.
It'd probably be better if you just take one little good bit.
[Gm] Do one little good bit a bit more first though.
A bit longer.
Yeah, when there's one little good bit I'll let you know.
I find it a miracle that we're still able to do this this far into our career.
[Bbm]
[Bb]
[F] [Eb] It's a fairy tale for us in the band.
We never [F] dreamed of this.
But one thing we knew is we [Eb] wanted to keep [Bbm] it as well once we got it.
[Eb]
[Ebm] [Bb] Replaced by another, [F] wearing [Eb] his crown.
[Gb] [Bb]
You know, we've had our struggles and our ups and downs.
But I think I'm supposed to do it.
I mean, [G] I'm not good at anything else.
