[F#] Hey, this is John of Learning Guitar Now and this is podcast 28 and in today's podcast
I'm going to show you another lit continuation of last podcast where I was talking to you
about the Derek Truck solo in Key to the Highway, the live version from the Song of Lines DVD.
[D] I just played the [Fm] lick for you that's [B] the continuation of the previous podcast and it's
a really cool lick.
It's got a lot of the same kind of aspects in it, just a bunch of unique type of rhythm
elements that's going on in it.
Once again this is open E tuning and this song is in the key of A.
[F#]
Let's go ahead and
break down that little lick for you.
The first part of it you're going to slide into [B]
the
[C] 10th fret on the G sharp [B] string.
Cool little position right there.
10th fret on G sharp string, [A#] 10th fret on B string next.
[B]
[F#] Then you're going to go down to the 12th fret [B]
and slide up on the high E string.
[F#]
Now go to the 10th [D#] fret on the high E string and slide into that.
[F#m] So you got 10th fret, slide into it, hit it twice, slowly.
[B] Then you're going to do this common move [F#] he likes to do all the time and it's one of my
favorite kind of moves to do as well.
I guess I learned it from him.
You're going to slide down 10, 8, 5 on the [B] high E string and you have to get your pitch
real good because it's got to be [E] right above the [C] fret and the pitch has got to be right
on for this lick to sound good.
[Bm] So it sounds like
So that means you got to go 10, [F#] 8, 5 and then hit it again.
Slowly.
[D]
[B] After that you're going to hit 7 on the B string.
Little major [F#]
6 sound.
It sounds really cool.
So that whole lick is slow.
[F#m]
[B] Regular speed.
[D] [F#m]
[F#] And it's just a really cool sounding lick.
The whole thing just put together.
You just got to be right on pitch [D]
with that slide down.
Minor pentatonic scale.
[F#m]
[F#]
And then cut it off 7th fret B string.
[C] And the second [F#] part of the lick [B] we're going to jump up to 10th fret on the B string here
and the key that's A note since we're playing the key of A.
This is the root.
So we got 10 slide [D] backwards to 3 [A#] up into 5 and then 5 on the [F#m] E string.
[B] B string 10th fret.
[D] Third fret B string.
[F#] Fifth fret G sharp string.
[A] [A#] Fifth fret E string.
[F#m]
[A] [F#]
Come back into the fifth fret of the G sharp string.
Third fret of the B [D]
string.
Fifth [E] fret of the B string.
[F#] And then you got fifth fret of the G string.
Fifth fret of the [F#m] E string.
Fifth fret of [C#] the low B [E] string.
[G#m] Third fret of the B [D] string.
[A#] Slide up into second [C#] fret.
[F#] The whole lick slowly sounds like this.
[F#m]
[A] [D] [G#]
[F#] And you got to notice the rhythm on the very end if you don't do it right it's not a triplet.
[A] It's not [E] a triplet.
It is a dotted [F#] 16th if you want to get down specifically to what the rhythm is.
It sounds like this.
It kind of has a drag sound [A] to it.
[A#] [B] And that's a really cool move to [A#] use in this type of 6-8 is what the key of the highway
is 6-8 and you count 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 [A] 6.
[C] So that rhythm kind [A] of drags.
[D] [C#]
[A] That [F#] 5 5 5 all on the G sharp E and the B string.
[A] [G#] Sounds really cool.
The whole lick.
[A]
[C#] And if you don't [F#] do it like that it's definitely not going to sound like it.
You have to drag those 16th [A] notes [G]
[F#] to get that sound.
[A]
[C#] [G#]
[A] [F#]
It's just an awesome little rhythm [B] he put together there for that little lick.
So [F#] slowly it sounds like this.
[A]
[B]
[Cm] [F#]
And that's pretty much the whole lick.
I'll play the whole thing slowly.
[D]
[F#m]
[B] [A#m]
[Am] [C#]
[F#] So it's just an awesome lick to play over a blues song.
And if you're interested in learning more about open E tuning I have a 6 DVD slide guitar
course [D#] that will show you exactly how to play like this.
How to mute.
How to rake.

a cool [D#] Derek Trucks lick.
