_ _ [F#] _ _ _ _ Hey, this is John of Learning Guitar Now and this is podcast 28 and in today's podcast
I'm going to show you another lit continuation of last podcast where I was talking to you
about the Derek Truck solo _ in Key to the Highway, the live version from the Song of Lines _ _ DVD.
[D] I just played the [Fm] lick for you that's [B] the continuation of the previous podcast _ and it's
a really cool lick.
It's got a lot of the same kind of aspects in it, just a bunch of unique type of rhythm
_ _ elements that's going on in it.
Once again this is open E tuning _ _ and this song is in the key of A.
[F#]
Let's go ahead and
break down that little lick for you.
The first part of it you're going to slide into [B] _ _
_ the _ _ _ _ _
[C] 10th fret on the G sharp [B] string. _ _
_ _ _ Cool little position right there.
10th fret on G sharp string, [A#] 10th fret on B string next.
[B] _ _ _ _ _ _
[F#] Then you're going to go down to the 12th fret [B] _
_ _ and _ slide up on the high E string.
_ _ _ _ _ [F#]
Now go to the 10th [D#] fret on the high E string and slide into that.
[F#m] _ _ _ So you got _ _ 10th _ fret, _ _ slide into it, _ _ _ _ _ _ hit it twice, _ slowly. _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [B] Then you're going to do this common move [F#] he likes to do all the time and it's one of my
favorite kind of moves to do as well.
I guess I learned it from him.
You're going to slide down 10, 8, 5 on the [B] high E string and you have to get your pitch
_ real good _ because it's got to be [E] right above the [C] fret and the pitch has got to be right
on for this lick to sound good.
[Bm] So it sounds _ _ like_ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ So that means you got to go 10, _ _ _ [F#] _ 8, 5 _ and then hit it again. _ _ _
_ _ _ Slowly.
_ _ [D] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ _ _ _ After that you're going to hit 7 on the B string.
_ _ _ Little major [F#]
6 sound.
It sounds really cool. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So that whole lick is slow.
_ [F#m] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
[B] _ _ _ _ _ _ Regular speed.
[D] _ _ _ _ _ _ [F#m] _
_ _ _ _ [F#] _ _ And it's just a really cool sounding lick.
The whole thing just put together.
You just got to be right on pitch [D]
with that slide down. _ _ _
_ _ Minor pentatonic scale.
[F#m] _
_ _ _ _ _ _ [F#] _
And then cut it off _ 7th fret B string.
_ _ _ [C] And the second [F#] part of the lick [B] _ we're going to jump up to 10th fret _ on the B string here
and the key that's _ A note since we're playing the key of A.
This is the root. _ _
_ _ _ _ _ So we got 10 _ _ slide [D] backwards to 3 _ _ [A#] up into 5 _ and then 5 on the [F#m] E string. _
[B] B string 10th fret. _ _ _
[D] _ _ _ Third fret B string.
_ _ [F#] Fifth fret G sharp string.
[A] _ _ [A#] Fifth fret E string.
[F#m] _
_ _ _ [A] _ _ _ _ [F#]
Come back into the fifth fret of the G sharp string.
_ _ _ _ Third fret of the B [D]
string.
_ Fifth [E] fret of the B string. _
_ _ _ [F#] And then you got fifth fret of the G string.
_ _ Fifth fret of the [F#m] E string.
_ _ Fifth fret of [C#] the low B [E] string.
_ _ _ _ _ [G#m] Third fret of the B [D] string.
_ [A#] Slide up into second [C#] fret. _
_ _ [F#] The whole lick slowly sounds like this.
[F#m] _ _ _ _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ [D] _ _ [G#] _
_ [F#] And you got to notice the rhythm on the very end if you don't do it right it's not a triplet.
[A] It's not _ _ _ _ [E] a triplet.
It is a dotted [F#] 16th if you want to get down specifically to what the rhythm is.
It sounds like this.
It kind of has a drag sound [A] to it.
_ [A#] _ _ _ _ _ [B] And that's a really cool move to [A#] use in this type of 6-8 is what the key of the highway
is 6-8 and you count 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 [A] 6.
_ _ _ [C] _ So that rhythm kind [A] of _ drags.
[D] _ _ [C#] _
_ _ [A] That [F#] 5 5 5 all on the G sharp E and the B string.
[A] _ _ _ _ [G#] _ Sounds really cool.
The whole lick.
_ [A] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [C#] _ _ _ And if you don't [F#] do it like that it's definitely not going to sound like it.
You have to drag those 16th [A] notes _ [G] _ _
_ _ [F#] to get that sound.
[A] _ _
_ [C#] _ _ _ [G#] _ _ _ _
_ [A] _ _ _ _ _ [F#] _
It's just an awesome little rhythm [B] he put together there for that little lick.
So _ _ [F#] slowly it sounds like this.
_ _ _ _ [A] _
_ _ _ [B] _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [Cm] _ [F#] _ _
And that's pretty much the whole lick.
I'll play the whole thing slowly.
_ [D] _ _ _ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ [F#m] _ _ _ _
_ [B] _ _ _ [A#m] _ _ _ _
_ _ _ [Am] _ _ _ _ [C#] _
_ [F#] _ So it's just an awesome lick to play over a blues song.
And if you're interested in learning more about open E tuning I have a 6 DVD slide guitar
course [D#] that will show you exactly how to play like this.
_ How to mute.
How to rake.

the rhythm and go ahead and listen to the tune and [C] you'll be on your way to playing
a cool [D#] Derek Trucks lick.
[D#m] Ok that's it for this [B] podcast. _ _ _ _

[Bm] So it sounds _ _ like_ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ So that means you got to go 10, _ _ _ [F#] _ 8, 5 _ and then hit it again. _ _ _
_ _ _ Slowly.
_ _ [D] _
